Ask the Dragon Imperial Top 10
This week’s letter is the last of three from Leonard:
“Hi, my question is: what are the best 10 imperial pieces”
LOL, you guys really like your top ten lists don’t you. Well here are some of the top pieces for the imperials in no particular order.
1) Mas Amedda – Okay its kinda lame when your #1 piece isn’t even imperial, but anywhere you can play him, Mas changes the complexion of your team. Getting rid of that pesky ‘within 6’ restriction goes a long ways towards making your commanders that much better.
2) Grand Admiral Thrawn – While Thrawn is also a bit of a no brainer, in my honest opinion people have gotten pretty lazy with him. He used to make Jedi tremble because attacks coming from his Ysalimari bubble could not be responded to with block or deflect. Now a days all people use Thrawn for is the +3/+3 and the board wide swapping abilities. His Ysalimari trick has pretty much fallen by the way side. The auto init is huge as well, but that could be coped with if played carefully. Great fig, but no longer played to his full potential.
3) RS Emperor – Giving your characters a free force point without actually making them susceptible to anti force-user gimmicks is huge. You get the free reroll or the extra two movement. That lightning can also be pretty deadly if your opponent forgets about the chaining for a moment.
4) Lord Vader – The sheer muscle of this guy is incredible! He packs the most offensive punch out of nearly any figure in the game. He has no defensive abilities to speak of, but what else do you expect with all of that offense.
5) Darth Vader, Jedi Hunter – a lot of people have forgotten about this guy in favor of Lord Vader, but I like him because he has more options. His offense is half of what Lord Vader’s is, but he has a host of defensive abilities that augment his still potent offense. Most Jedi are still going to fear this guy.
6) Admiral Piett – What a huge boost for troopers. Giving them opportunist on top of Thrawn’s boosting effects is just sick. No more running around the little guys just to get to the real threats. Having recon also helps late in the game when your opponent makes a rush at your commanders.
7) General Veers – If you are running a lot of shooters, you have to throw in veers for that accurate shot. With all of the imperial and fringe characters that he helps out, he is a must for grunt-based armies.
8) Imperial Probe Droid – While you now have two pieces with recon, it never hurts to throw in the probe droid with Piett. It will help Piett last longer and the probe droid can be a very effective grunt jammer. One self-destruct and there goes all of your opponents ugnaughts.
9) Imperial Stormtrooper – A five point figure that can now have accurate shot, a 22 base defense and shoot people with a +11 for 20 DAM is just plain sick!
10) Darth Vader, Imperial commander – Leader of the afore mentioned 22 DEF stormtrooper, IC Vader also has the best force package of any Jedi in the game. With deflect for non-melee characters and riposte for melee, at 53 points he is an absolute beast of a Jedi.
And there you have it – the top imperial pieces. Thanks for the email Leonard. I hope this gives you an idea on what’s out there for the imperials. Actually in doing this list, you really don’t have more than a dozen or so good pieces that are not grunts anyway. There were a couple other pieces that make honorable mention: Nightsister Sith Witch, Marauder, RotS Vader. Good pieces, but not quite the top ten. If anyone has any questions or topics you would like me to cover, drop me a line at sithdragon13@yahoo.com. I will get to ALL emails, so if you have sent something be patient. I know I have a few stacked up right now. It’s coming ;)
May the Force Be With You.
