Today we look at one of the two new "hot" droids for
the separatist armies. The Chameleon droid is a
rather cool figure. It being a droid, its stats are
quite deceiving. The 60HP is actually pretty good
for a 26pt droid. Anymore and i would call this
figure borderline broken. The 16 DEF is solid for a
droid. The +6 attack is horrible, but at the same
time, this is a droids we are talking about, so you
never really have to worry about low attacks on
droids, and it has the base 20 DAM.
Now let's talk boosts. The defense is actually a 20
because there is no way you are going to run this
thing without the new Grievous, so that is very
solid for a droid. That makes it pretty much immune
to grunts. The attack is also much better than a
six. If you are running Grievous, the Chameleon has
a +10 ATK. Add a battle droid officer, and you are
sitting at a +14 ATK. Not too shabby.
Okay, but it only has one attack right? Nope, guess
again. Again, if you are running Grievous the
Chameleon has twin attack, which is sweet. Its this
next part that i love. Many people have gone way way
way way back to their Clone Strike figures, and dug
out their Geonosian Overseers to give this thing
double attack. You now have a 26 point figure with a
20 DEF, +14 ATK, and an effective quad attack. The
only thing this thing is missing is accurate, and
thank God it doesnt have that, or it would be really
sick.
The final two abilities make it even better. The
first is Invisibility. Basically, cover or not, you
cannot touch this guy unless you are adjacent to
him. It is a permanent cloak/super stealth that
cannot be taken away. The last ability makes this
even better. Mines 20 makes it so when you move
adjacent to this character you roll a save. Make it
you are fine. Miss it and you take 20 DAM. Out this
all together and you have one potent package.
This piece has only two real weaknesses. The first
is lack of accurate, so it wont be able to attack
characters with stealth, but unlike most figures
that rely on some sort of SS/cloak, this figure does
not suffer from having to advance since it can do so
right down the middle of any board and still cant be
attacked. The other is the bigger weakness. If this
thing hits a powerful source of disruptive, Kyle
especially, but even R2PO and Talon can cause
problems due to the lack of accurate, its in
trouble. We ran a team tournament and matched a
Kyle/Mara squad against some chameleon droids. The
droids got slaughtered.
There ar etwo rules issues i would like to point
out. First, if you have them next to each other and
an enemy enters an overlapping square, he only has
to roll the mines save once because the two cases of
mines in one square would be considered a violation
of the stacking rule. Secondly, due to the wording,
mines DO trigger when a character with flight goes
over them. All that is required is the character
enter the square. Flight only prevents Attacks of
Opportunity.
100pts: I dont think they will work here simply
because they are so CE dependent. You cant run two
of these with two overseers, a BDO and a couple ugs,
and they are not too bad, but i still dont think
like that they will be able to generate enough
damage output. One with Grievous may work okay
against shooters. They may eek out some wins, but
this wont be their optimal format.
150/200pts: Here you can get plenty of help because
you can get all the CE's and additional help you
need. Run 1-2 of these with 1-2 Lancer droids and
you have a killer combo! The one thing with these
sqauds is they tend to be low on activations, but
they have a massive amount of damage output.
Droid
Wall Climber
Invisibility (Cannot be targeted by nonadjacent
enemies)
Mines 20 (An enemy that moves adjacent to this
character takes 20 damage; Save 11.)
Today’s MotD is the Chameleon droid. This droid is
actually pretty good by itself and very good with GG,
DAC. There are many reasons for this.
His stats aren’t great without GG, DAC with a decent
60 health, an average 6 defense and a pretty low 6
attack, his damage however is a surprising 20 all
decent with the exception of the attack. However,
With GG, DAC those stats become very good actually
but those are only the tip of the iceberg with the
Chameleon.
His abilities are all good in that there pretty
synergetic. With the new ability Invisibility, you
have to get adjacent to attack the chameleon NO
EXCEPTIONS, COUNTER, OR ANYHTING. The only drawback
is that he never has cover but I am sure most will
be willing to sacrifice that. Then Mines 20
compliments Invisibility greatly basically if anyone
wants to do damage to the chameleon it has to risk
taking 20 damage (avoidable by save of 11). He is a
droid so he cannot be affected by crits which means
almost no one can kill him in one hit.
He has no glaring weakness’ that come to mind I am
sure he has some but there so minor there almost
unnoticeable.
100: 3/5 There good here but without GG, DAC there
really not that great, and there’s no room to have
GG, DAC, and 2-3 Chameleon Droids.
150/200: 4/5 They are great here with GG, DAC a real
annoyance but still beatable so not quite a 5 but a
high end 4.
