This week we look at two Ladies of the Force.  Today is the Dark Lady, Lumiya.  I really want to like her, but to me she is a walking contradiction and really doesnt pull the weight she is supposed too.

For 53 points, we get a very nice 140HP.  The DEF is about right for the type of Jedi she is.  The attack is also kinda low.  She is a pilot.  I dont get it.  It seems like this set they threw pilot on just about every other figure, whether it made sense or not, but whatever.  Lumiya is a cyborg.  All this really means is that she can be healed and repaired.  The problem is that the sith doesnt really have any healers or repairers, and fringe only has a couple viable options for repair.  Lumiya has stealth.  This can be good because it keeps everyone without accurate from lighting her up from across the field.  One big advantage is usually that you can run a Bith Vigo for super evade (rerollable), but Lumiya already has it, so forget the Bith.

Lumiya's most unique feature is that she is the first ever character with MR3.  She can reach farther back through crowds, or just attack from a square farther back than a MR2 figure.  It is nice, but i really do not see it being much different from MR2.  Regeneration 10 is one of those abilities that i have never really been fond of.  It is hard to get a figure to stand still in today's game, and Lumiya is no different.  If you can buy yourself a break, you can shed some damage, but at the same time it will seldom be enough to do much good when she is usually going to be a front line fighter.

Self Destruct 40 is wicked, but it is also where her great contradiction comes into being.  When you have a figure with MR3, the last thing you want to do is let the opposition base you, yet with self destruct 40 you want to make sure you are basing something big when you die.  Now that may seem not to contradict, but at the same time, with the amount of damage that can be dealt in a game, that can be a good half of her HP.

Her final trick is FP2.  This can be nice when trying to get away from a big multi-attacker, but the problem here is that it zaps her force points really fast, and with only 4 permanent FP, that will eat them fast.  Keep in mind with her low attacks and evade rerolls, her force points are already at a premium.

As i said, I really want to like Lumiya, but her tricks all seem really hard to pull off. Well, that and i dont care for evade because i fail 85% of my evade saves.  What Lumiya really needs is to hide behind a meat shield, so you opponent either has to deal with the bigger threat or pay the consequences.  Bane, Ceadus, and Krayt come to mind.  Exar has a bit different play style to really fit this role.

100pts:  She wont be good enough here.  She doesnt have the damage output for the cost here.

150pts: I dont think she is really very good here either outside of a fun game or scenario.  She just needs too much support and she really doesnt have a very good damage output.

200pts: Here she will be as good as she can get, but like i also said, she needs a really big meat shield to distract from her.  She will be good against melee and mid level pieces, but that is about it.  She can be a bit of a fun piece to play, but in the end she just cant hold up her own points in a battle.  Give her renewal (with Sith force ghost or something) and she would get better, but her FP just run out too quickly, and right now there isnt a lot of Sith support.  In many ways, the Sith are turning into a new faction of Seperatist force users - all big Jedi with little/no grunt support or synergy between units.

Right off the bat we've got some good stats.  140 HP is great, 20 def is good, +12 attack is decent and 20 Dam is standard.  Ability-wise though, this chick is loaded.  Stealth and Evade will help her greatly against shooters.  Self-destruct 40 will mean that any melee piece that wants to take her out will likely take 40 damage in the process.  Regeneration 10 will let her get a little HP back anytime she doesn't move on her activation.  All of this would be great by itself but we get a new abilty with Lumiya.  She's the first character to recieve Melee Reach 3!  Getting to attack from three squares away can really come in handy, especially when trying to avoid basing an enemy melee fig.

Force push 2 is a bit of a bonus and can come in handy, but you'll most likely want to save your force points for re-rolling attacks that are bound to miss with only a +12 attack.  As with Krayt, don't ask why she has the Pilot SA.  We can only assume that we'll get a CE for Sith pilots in a coming set.

100pts 2/5:  She can be used here but don't expect great things.  Her damage output is just way too low to hang.

150 and 200pts 3/5:  In both of these formats she performs about the same.  A low attack and only double really hurts her, so running her with Darth Krayt (giving her triple attack) is one obvious solution.  The Sith faction as a whole are still hard to play in either format, but in the future she may get the support she needs to be truly effective.
