Now that there is again a card with the actual storm keyword in a Standard-legal set, I want Mark Rosewater to stop doing that “Storm Scale” thing. It obviously doesn’t mean anything any more. I know he won’t stop doing it, and someone will probably rationalize it by saying that this card doesn’t actually break anything. That is probably true in Standard: there aren’t any ritual effects or cards with suspend, and the best-case scenarios are no more or less threatening than anything else in the format. But it’s destined to be a big card in casual play, where you now have a Dragonstorm variant which doesn’t run the risk of drawing your uncastable payoff before you get the cheat cards. It may even have a run as a rogue card in formats that do have ritual effects, because it has the advantage of being a Dragonstorm variant that doesn’t get hit by cards like Negate or Spell Pierce. Come to think of it, maybe Rosewater should do one last Storm Scale question, just to explain who thought of this card!

We may not have gotten Dragonstorm, but we did get a dragon with storm, so good enough, right? Stormscale Scion is an interesting creature because of how it plays with dragons overall, able to parley a lot of spells into an army of its own. Even just one spell before this presents 10 power in one spell, and it escalates viciously with a bit of massaging. The lack of haste can be a bit of a downer, but a lot of bodies can leave a mark, and buffing all of your Dragons can ensure you underscore the ways in which swooping is bad in spectacular fashion.
