Stormsplitter feels like one of those cards that’s going to get broken in half, somehow. While it’s unassuming normally, it copies itself with each instant and sorcery you cast…and those copies retain the ability to replicate on each spell. So one becomes two becomes four becomes a massive problem, and they even have haste and solid toughness! The copies do self-exile, so they won’t turn into an issue that way, but the premise is that a Stormsplitter that’s given time to start sloughing off friends can spiral out of control in one turn; even three spells alone gives you 8 Otters, and that’s before any buffs come into play. I think this can definitely be a problem in conjunction with a lot of different tools, and it’s a good supplement to the Otter gameplan overall.

I like the play on words involved with Stormsplitter’s name and abilities, and I think it invites some interesting play patterns. Don’t lose track of the number of copies and the number of duplicates of the copying ability you have on the table, because that’s what makes it so good – it gets out of control surprisingly easily, and having four toughness makes him resilient against damage-based removal and deceptively hard to block when the copies attack in swarms. I’m also impressed how well he plays with most spell-related abilities: flashback is an obvious one, especially spells where the up-front cost and the flashback are both cheap, but rebound and suspend give you comparatively easy ways to get more spells for less mana. I think Stormsplitter is going to turn out to be a very popular card, and it could well be a high-level one as well.
