Minigames can be surprisingly fun – heck, even Shahrazad has fans! – and Strixhaven Stadium gives you quite an impressive payoff. You can use it on more than one opponent in a multiplayer context, provided you have enough time to do so, and your opponents have a recourse that’s built into most decks. I’m not sure that tournament settings will prefer building around this over just dealing lethal damage with those creatures, but it’s also worth noting that it defeats infinite life combos and things like Platinum Emperion.
This is one of those occasions where it’s a little unfortunate that Magic’s default gameplay doesn’t have much built-in roleplaying. It’s a card where you want to hear the roar of the crowd and give people a chance to rile up the audience (even with cheap heat!).
Constructed: 2/5
Casual: 4/5
Limited: 4/5
Multiplayer: 3/5
Commander: 3/5
A sort of pseudo-Door to Nothingness? If nothing else, this card seems rather tantalizing in terms of your ability to land “surprise” kills. You can only kill one person a turn with the trigger (outside of things like attacking with six hundred sixty-six squirrels), and your opponents do have a chance to “fight back”, as it were. But this is a sort of fun card that serves both as a mana rock and a sort of threat to opponents who think they can bunker down and do Nothing forever. It shines in more proactive decks, though I suppose reactive ones can turtle up to charge this up before landing one lethal blow.
Constructed: 3 (not sold on this entirely, but it is fun, and there is potential to kill quickly with this if you build around it)
Casual: 4.5
Limited: 4.25 (they have to answer this)
Multiplayer: 3.5 (politics make this interesting, and using “weaker” players to charge this up is promising, but it’s certainly not an airtight strategy)
Commander: 3.75 (same deal here)
