For many years, some people considered blue control decks to have a very particular game design flaw: opponents, it was said, couldn’t tell whether or not they were winning, and when they lost, they didn’t know why. It’s true that many players underestimate card drawing when they’re learning to play, and that it takes a while to grasp that some decks don’t care if they take damage in the early game.

Tatyova does not have that particular problem – her game text comes right out and says that her controller intends to draw a ton of cards and gain a bunch of life. Even when she’s limited to one trigger per turn, the advantages add up fast, and when she isn’t (Azusa, et al), it feels downright unfair. There are also very few reliable ways to stop an opponent from playing lands, so you still have to destroy her and all the other enablers, lest they grind the game out. I guess that’s technically more fair than “end of turn, Fact or Fiction, you lose” because she sits on the table and you see it coming, but she’s caused a lot of raised eyebrows at Commander tables and will continue to do so.

Despite being an uncommon, Tatyova’s actually proven herself as a decently powerful card, thanks to landfall (which she was errata’d to now have) being one of the more effective abilities in terms of firing. She gives use to excess lands, and she makes land-churning combos pop off even harder. It’s a simple ability, but an efficacious one all the same, and she’s proven herself in Commander as a rather subtle, yet value-oriented card. I don’t believe she’s ever made a splash in Constructed, owing to being an understated combo piece who costs five mana, but she’s proven herself in more casual settings all the same.

Constructed: 2 (she’s a combo extender that costs as much as a combo payoff)
Casual: 4
Limited: 3.75
Multiplayer: 3
Commander [EDH]: 4
