Today we have
what is arguably the best new card in First Edition.
The Rare Banker Character Samuel Gristwalter.
Never mind his threshold of 4. Or his strength of 0.
Or his speed of 1.
While this Character is in play, “No damage can be
inflicted to your faction.”
Ok, now close your mouth and put your eyes back in
your head.
I can’t count how many times I heard “Oh My God!”
echo around the Anaheim Convention center during
GenCon SoCal, but I can tell you that most of them
were from players in one of the many The Spoils
sealed tournaments when they opened this fat cat.
Two people were actually lucky enough to get 2 out
of their Competition pack and 2 boosters!
This card really needs no explanation other than it
only protects against damage, not influence loss ala
Blanching Butcher, Concealed Goon, Mafia Lawyer,
Humiliating Torture Apparatus, Dragon’s Strategy
etc. And, it’s worth noting that his life of 3 puts
him out of the [instant kill] reach of almost every
direct damage card/effect the Warlords could throw
at him: Target Practice, Shriever Attack, Rabid
Sarume, Hidden Sniper, Flaming Barduse. Only Bask
Bile and a somewhat expensive Skewer can do him in.
But believe you me, Samuel will become an instant
target and priority of your opponent as soon as he
hits the field!
In limited you’ll be forced to hold your best poker
face when you draw him. In constructed where you can
plan to tutor for him and/or use recursion to get
him back, he’s going to be Da Man!
Limited: 4.5/5
Constructed: 5/

This card is
amazing. It stops you from taking damage. It does
not stop you from losing influence to your own
Banker cards like Blanching Butcher, nor from taking
damage from Humiliating Torture Apparatus.
It's as good as Ferret when it comes to attracting
kill cards.
Many people who were at GenCon are swearing by this
card now. Or at it, depends on which side of the
table they were on, really. It won games. It won
money. And its a Banker. Three cheers.
Now for me to focus slightly. It's benefits in
Sealed should be obvious. In Constructed it lets you
do whatever dastardly plan you have without blocking
and without taking damage. I can see this in a
Covert based deck.... hmm....

Samuel
Grizwalter
Today we look at one of the Unique characters that
Greed has to offer, the slightly less sexy Sam G.
This guy has mafia lawyer written all over him.
While Bankers have a few lawyers that can take the
fall for you like Pettifogger, or get you some more
advantage like Ms. Winterbottom, Sammy gets you off
the hook with no drawbacks at all, he doesn't even
die himself.
His effect simply put will not allow your faction to
take damage as long as he exist on the field,
essentially making you indestructible as long as you
can keep him there. He's very much like magic's
"Worship" combo rolled into one card. Now he only
cost 4 but his threshold is a rough 4 as well. So he
wont be seeing much action till later in the game
but that's when you want him anyway.
I don't like many Bankers but this is one that's
growing on me. Give him a try he may surprise you,
even if he's not as nice to look at as his female
counterpart.
