Here is my mantra on this card: “The threat of Runic Cannon is far worse than Runic Cannon”. This card will get into peoples’ heads as being something really bad for them. What a lot of people fail to realize is that it’s trading 1 point of damage for 1 card. Sure, when your opponent has a Cannon Solider or a Pluck on the board, you’re fine with that. In some scenarios, it can be used as a good combat trick. Then again, I’m not a big fan of tricks that aren’t a trick. Mind you, the card is good and can get you out of some nasty situations, but I just is much better on paper than it is in actual game play.

In constructed, it’s basically crap. There is much better removal, the item destruction will be in every deck, and you’ll never get this thing going for anything of significance. If you could split damage it would be muck better, but you will find so many cards that are just better than this when building constructed.

Pretty awesome in limited play. Cannon is non dependant on other conditions, which a lot of the destruction cards in this game are. It's a nice place to dump extra mana (though at 3, it does pull from your card draw).

But it does deal with what's bothering you, in the case of smaller characters.

At our website, we do seem to be seeing some interest in it for constructed also. Especially nice for dealing with characters that die to 1 or 2 damage.

doc Today we have an Uncommon Gearsmith card, Runic Cannon.

At cost 2 threshold 2, it’s easy to get into play. Since it’s an item, it’s one of the harder card types to get out of play. This is a good combination!
The 2 abilities on the card are “Load”: Cost- Pay 3. Effect: Put a token on this card.
“Fire”: Cost- Deplete this card, pick a character. Effect: Inflict X damage to the character where X is the number of tokes on this card. Then, remove all tokens from this card.”
Any card that does direct damage is good in my book. Having the ability to build up, and with the numerous ways to get extra tokens on it without paying 3 it can happen QUICKLY, it is one of the most powerful cards for direct damage. While it’s not one of the big “game breaker” cards, it’s definitely one of the big dogs for maintaining board control.

Character removal is always a good thing, so Runic Cannon should be a nice cheap staple in Gearsmith decks. Especially nice is the way it can be replenished; you can Load or there are lots of ways to get tokens onto cards <cough>Arcanists<cough>, so Runic Cannon would do excellently in an Arcanist/Gearsmith constructed deck.

It’s even better in limited, because there are fewer ways to deal with characters, so character removal is precious. Even if I didn’t have a whole lot of solid Gearsmith cards if I were playing limited and I pulled this card, I would probably splash in some Elitism so I could potentially play it.

Mistie Runic Cannon

While this card can literally win games in limited I don’t feel that it will be up to the task of constructed. Not that it won’t do well but there are more chances of your opponent running item removal in this format which is sudden death for your cannon. This card when in play can not only kill things but can intimidate your opponent and perhaps even change the way they would play and think sometimes even causing them to make mistakes, which is deffinetly to your advantage. On the down side it does take three resources to inflict one point of damage to one character, which can be a strain on your resources and prevent you from playing and drawing cards. Some of you may feel the price is to high, but then some might just agree with the cannon and say “I don’t care how much it costs …….. kill it.”

Constructed 3.5
