After our
long weekend we bring you the common Gearsmith
tactic Exploding Sock Puppet!
For a cost of 2 with the lowest threshold possible,
this tactic is one of the very few cards that can be
considered a counter card. Not only that, your
opponent is not allowed to respond to it so even if
they have a Tactician Vacation (the only counter to
tactic cards) your kill is assured.
Character destruction is one of the most sought
after aspects in any deck. Sometimes your removal is
based on a characters life or strength and sometimes
cost. Fewer cards still will remove a character
regardless of any stat. The only catch is you have
to wait until they “try” to use an ability. Here’s
the part you do have to be careful of; not every
ability is an ability you can respond to. An ability
that is a trigger (Bloodcurdling Bulldozer or a
“when this card comes into play” card for example)
can’t be responded to at all, so ESP has its
limitations. You won’t be able to smack down a Dock
Sentinel or Union Leader (in sealed of course) but
good old Pluck or Rudo or even OLHPB trying to hide
are toast!
In limited any removal is good removal, but you’re
more likely to find a use for ESP in draft over
sealed. In constructed you’ve always got more
options for removal cards and with Jacques Trap and
Slingerang also filling this roll, ESP may not be
your first choice depending on your meta.

Exploding
Sock Puppet
Exploding Sock Puppet is one of the new Gearsmith
tactics introduced in Part Two, and a homage to the
creative designers prior projects. At two cost and
only one Elitism threshold, this card is almost an
immediate "in" in all limited and constructed decks.
This card says that the opponent cannot respond to
this card, and it can only be played in response to
a character's ability. This is referring to an
ability that says "Cost" and then has an "Effect,"
such as Erotic Assassin. Exploding Sock Puppet stops
the ability, and destroys the character that it was
used on.
This card is good against Erotic Assassin, One
Legged Hopping Pogo Bear (at times,) Schrpoingmajig,
and countless other cards that will undoubtedly be
making appearances in your local meta.
