Hump day
brings us the rare Arcanist tactic Ecto-Distillation.
The card could be known as “The Crazy Tutor.” For a
cost of 4 with a threshold of 3, you get to tutor
for a card. Seems a bit expensive to me…
Consider Luteoderm Prototype (cost 2 threshold 1),
the most often used card that can tutor for
anything, or Servile Centipede (cost 4 threshold 1
tactic tutor that’s also a 1/3/3) and you’re left
wondering, what’s so special about this card to make
its cost/threshold so high? AND it’s a rare.
Deck thinning. If there’s ever a sure fire 2 or 3 or
4 card “instant win combo”, this is the card that
will make it happen.
Name a card, search your deck for any number of
copies of that card, reveal them and put one in your
hand. The rest go into the discard pile. Then, you
opponent has the option of searching your deck (by
this time they probably already know what they’re
going to find) and putting into the discard pile any
copies you missed.
So what if you name Obsession and have 60 copies in
your deck? Presto! All that’s left in your draw pile
is the cards you need for the insta-win!
Ok, so this has all been theoretical, and no such
combo exists. And quite frankly, the people at
Tenacious Games aren’t likely to even allow such a
combo to come into existence anyway.
But it will still thin your deck and net you a card.
If that’s what you’re looking for, here it is!
In limited, it can be an expensive tutor for one
card. In constructed, it just seems like it’ll have
a great use…some day.

Ecto-Distillation
Ecto-Distillation is an amazing enabling card for
constructed decks. The first use that should occur
to you is using it to search for 'tech' cards that
you're only running single copies of. But the
primary usage, in my mind, is searching for
resources. If you want to be able to play such
powerhouses as Gargantuan Garbler and Ashes of
Zenobia, you need to be able to get up to four
threshold. Yet reaching that threshold involves
playing a lot of resources in your deck. This will
cause you to draw resource cards when you need to
draw critical cards to ensure your survival. I've
seen games be determined by who could draw a
character first. The problem with resources is that
as soon as you've met threshold, the become blank
cards. Once you've met one below your maximum
threshold, Ecto-Distillation can get you the last
card you need and pull all the rest out of your
deck. That's incredible. Hypothetically you could
fill your deck with a staple resource and a few key
cards you need to win, and then use this to leave
you only with the cards you need.
If you get this in Sealed or Draft with a few
Servile Centipedes, it can enable you to do a two
trade deck with high threshold Arcanist cards and no
dead resource draws. That's an incredible ability.
