Every cosy fantasy setting needs a warm place at its center, and Three Tree City fills that role in every way you can imagine. I don’t know whether they did it intentionally, but the seasonal variants you can get send a clear message of “you are always welcome here when things are hard”. And it also offers the possibility of some very powerful gameplay – even limited to the context of Bloomburrow, it’s quite easy to come out ahead even if all you’re doing is picking cards by color or by cuteness. In more open formats, it gets even stronger, as you just pack your deck with creatures that appear in swarms of cards or tokens. Some kindreds are even better positioned to take advantage of the effect than others: Squirrels and Rats are already dangerous in casual formats even when they don’t have access to a hundred mana each turn, and this might be the kind of thing to get Saprolings some of the attention they’ve been lacking in the last few sets.

Speaking of “rejiggered versions of old cards that winds up as a chase card of the set”, Three Tree City joins the chat as a take on Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx from Theros. It’s not in the same exact vein, but it does have a similar sort of payoff, a massive mana accelerant for decks that focus on a single type. Legendary and locking in a type on entry both keep this from being completely busted…but there are a lot of decks that can put a lot of one type out (like Rats, Zombies, Soldiers, Goblins, or Squirrels), and tokens do count favorably towards Three Tree City’s mana production. This isn’t for every deck, but if you have a particular type-based focal point, this may be worth considering, because it can generate obscene mana with just a bit of prior set-up.

Constructed: 4.25 (as strong as the best tribe-focused decks are)
Casual: 5
Limited: 4 (might not always be a slam dunk, but it’ll rarely be dead)
Multiplayer: 4
Commander [EDH]: 4.5
