Three Tree Mascot isn’t likely to win any constructed pro events any time soon, but it’s been attracting some attention for both retail and fan-made draft formats, as well as casual play in general. Right off the top, you might notice the similarity to Universal Automaton, but its stats are a little more than subtly better: a one-mana 1/1 changeling with no combat abilities does basically nothing other than add to creature type counts, but a two-mana 2/1 changeling with no combat abilities will occasionally trade with creatures that read as more valuable than it does and is a decent threat to many planeswalkers. Think of it as a lower-power example of what makes Dark Confidant a good card. The mana ability comes up more in Bloomburrow draft than in casual play, but it’s nice to have around, notably in cubes or theme decks that lack the expensive tier of lands for budget or aesthetic reasons.

And on top of all that, it’s another great example of the cosy fantasy aesthetic – maybe that’s enough to make a theme deck all of its own!

Here for immoral support of sorts, Three Tree Mascot is a sort of “glue” card in a draft format, letting you try to put the rest of a deck together with a bit of color correction and another body. It’s hardly a star, but both of these are…well, functional functions that it executes functionally and competently enough at a low spot on a mana curve. Don’t take it to FNM, but make full use of it in drafts, as being another member of every tribe is quite a nice role to have in a tribe-centric set.
