Torrential Tribute – Yu-Gi-Oh! Throwback Thursday (2003)

Torrential Tribute has been in the game since Labyrinth of Nightmare, and has been great ever since.

Easy to use, easy to activate, it has seen itself gone all over the banlist, but at the moment it is at three and no one seems to care, which shows the game state when something like that happens. Clear the field of every monster unless it is protected against card effects like Torrential Tribute. This can be a saving grace for a player no matter what turn they play it. Stop a big turn in its tracks, take away an opponents monster when in a top deck war, or trigger it to get monsters of your own into the grave to plus off their effects like Shaddoll and Burning Abyss do. Even if you don’t have monsters like those that gain off being sent to the grave, you can clear the field off your own summon to do get rid of an opponents established field. I loved summoning a small monster just to trigger Torrential Tribute back in the day, even better if it was a searcher like Sangan. Clearing the field for a BLS or CED years ago meant certain death for your opponent, and Torrential Tribute can still be that kind of card with so many ways to summon from the grave now in the game, you don’t even have to use your Normal Summon.

I still run a copy, and some decks run 3. It will always be a great card to use because of its flexibility and board-wipe power.

A self destruction archetype gives us a Throwback Thursday that can destroy your cards, and your opponent’s as well as we look at Torrential Tribute.

TT is a Normal Trap that upon a monster being summoned, you can destroy all monsters on the field. This can be a very strong blow-out when you don’t have as many monsters as the opponent does and it’s easy to use when you can sense the opponent isn’t done summoning monsters. It can trigger your monster effects, like the Unchained, but it does trigger opponent effects as well. If it would benefit the opponent, then you just likely won’t use this as you don’t want to help them. Torrential Tribute is still a fairly good Trap still, though more for the Side Deck in the case your opponent can benefit from this or you can Main Deck it if a Deck at the top doesn’t benefit from this.

Art: 4/5 It’s supposed to be water, which is hard to display. With that said, the color scheme is excellent.

Torrential Tribute takes Throwback Thursday back to the OLD school days of Yugioh.  This card has seen FIVE prior reviews, (links below) from it’s release back in 2003, to its most recent in 2012.  I caught the latter 3 of these (as I wasn’t here on the team until 2005).

ANYWAY, Torrential Tribute sat at 1 for a long time.  The review in 2012 was when it dropped to 2.  And it’s sat at 3 for a good while now too.  Much like Dark Hole, this can hit your Monsters, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing.  It’s a good out if you’re being swarmed and have fewer Monsters out, or even none at all.  Just as importantly, your opponent can gain effects from this too, and we’re all about our effects these days.  

As far as Field clearers go, this is still one of the best out there, even though it’s able to be used in multiples.  The versatility in it being able to be activated upon any Summon is a deliciously beautiful thing.  Play it if you have room, or it fits in, or even just keep it in your Side-Deck.  It might surprise you how often this card could be switched in and be a great help to you.

Art:  4.5/5  Water cards are tricky, but all things considered, I think this does a good job showcasing the torrential ability of the water in the picture.
