Three dryads, three abilities. And one of them’s even deathtouch…that might mean something.

Trostani, Three Whispers is an interesting creature, more aggressive than past Selesnya leaders have sometimes tended to be. It’s an efficient body, and it’s one that can be given keywords to help win combats. In particular, double strike and deathtouch together are very good deterrents. Notably, they can share their power with other creatures, and that can make for a lot of chaos; vigilance isn’t irrelevant, but it’s a bit less exciting.

Honestly, Trostani’s pretty good, and the only real knock is that they can be a bit mana intensive. Still, though, a 4/4 that can develop deathtouch can make for a deterrent, and while lacking protection that isn’t its toughness can be a bit of a downer, it’s not so much of one as to make this card bad. I definitely see decks in these colors playing them a healthy amount, as both a force multiplier and a force in and of themselves.

They think she did it, but they just can’t prove it . . .

Usually we expect cards that sit back and activate to mess with combat to be enchantments or artifacts. This new Trostani breaks that mold, although you could argue that the triad’s role in the guild is conceptually similar. I actually quite like the card – all three of the abilities can be relevant at various times, both on offense and defense. And being a three-mana 4/4 with a degree of flexibility in the casting cost means you don’t have so much of a tradeoff between your beatdown plan and your powerful activated abilities. They even work in multiplayer – there’s probably a quip to be made about Ravnica’s nasty political environment, but also the more straightforward point about making attacks directed at other players unsafe, and not just you, at your own discretion.
