Much as I like creatures that are good at attacking and blocking, I also get a kick out of ones that turn famous effects into something that can attack and block, even static ones like Furnace of Rath. In the case of Twinflame Tyrant, I feel like it might have a lot to do with the fact that the name, the effect, and the concept all go so well together. It’s quite the upgrade over Two-Headed Dragon, which I have nothing against except for the fact that it takes the concept a little too literally. Twinflame Tyrant, though, is just as aggressive as you want it to be, and comes at a cost which is plausible for either an aggro deck’s top end or a midrange deck’s time to turn the corner. It’s mostly for big, loud attacks, but it has a surprising amount of Johnny/Jenny design in its wording, too, thanks to counting any source you control. You can now tell people that you’re playing a “casual dragon storm” variant and, thanks to the fun of homophones, they won’t be quite sure what to expect until you start casting rituals.

The “obligatory dragon” of the set, here to underscore how swooping is, indeed, bad, Twinflame Tyrant is the kind of card that blows up impressively and plays well with red liking to amplify its damage sometimes. The kicker here is that it flat doubles all damage you deal to opponents, and this includes both combat and non-combat sources. While lacking haste is a bit of a bummer, Twinflame Tyrant can still be a potentially lethal swing in one turn…and even if it’s not, it’s functionally a 6/5 flier that also doubles the effective power of both your creatures and your burn sources. A card like this is very dangerous if it has any time to sit, and while I think it’s maybe not quite pushed for the deepest formats, this is still an efficient threat that makes what you have even more threatening.
