Hello Pojo Fans,

Ultimate Dragon of Pride and Soul continues the 25th Anniversary theme, but at least here we don’t have a completely useless card.

Three monsters needing to have 2500/2500 stats isn’t impossible, and, after searching the database I found several monsters that fit the bill…it’s just about if you want to go about running a Deck with them in it. You can always run two and use a fusion sub for the third, but I digress. When Fusion Summoned your Ultimate Dragon gets protection from targeting effects and destruction effects. 4500/4500 stat line is impressive enough that you won’t need its other effect, but if you happen to have 25 or more cards in your Graveyard, Ultimate Dragon will double its ATK/DEF. 9000/9000 is quite the stat line, but likely not to happen.

Even more unlikely is if your opponent happens to have 25 or more cards in their Graveyard, but if they do, you can wipe their board once per turn. I understand the theme, I understand that it has to be involved in these cards effects, but would it kill them to make it “combined Graveyards” and not just yours? Sure, that’s the balance to the card, however, that isn’t really a balance more than it is a hindrance. None of these monster’s effects have been remotely useful because of needing 25 or more cards in just one grave. Sure, this monster is likely going to be the best of the bunch because you can Fusion Summon it and it has a lot of ATK and there’s ways to get around having all three monsters have 2500/2500…but that’s not enough. Make these cards playable rather than just celebratory and amazing artwork.

Best of the bunch so far, but still not logically playable. You can sub out a Fusion Material so you only need two monsters with 2500/2500 stat line, and there are some good ones, but not where you’d be able to break this monster out consistently. Iris/Fleurdelis is the most realistic monster to use to make this Fusion Summon happen and even that isn’t going to help.

Instead of printing Dragon of Pride and Soul in 3 more colors, Konami decided now to make more cards for the 25th Anniversary of the game, so now we get a Fusion of Dragon of Pride and Soul with Ultimate Dragon of Pride and Soul.

Ultimate Dragon of Pride and Soul is a Level 12 DARK Dragon Fusion with 4500 ATK and DEF. Strong stats, plus DARK/Dragon is amazing. Materials are 3 monsters with an original ATK and DEF of 2500, so super specific, but doable with several options in the game beyond the other Anniversary cards. While you control this Fusion Summoned card, the opponent cannot target it or destroy it with card effects, so great protection that thankfully doesn’t rely on either player having 25 cards in the grave. We still got those effects, as if you do have at least 25 cards in the graveyard, this gains 4500 ATK and DEF. A very strong stat boost, but it requires a lot of cards in the graveyard. You already get 4 into the grave to Fusion Summon this, so you just need 21 more. At least it relies on your graveyard, so you could more reliably pull this off, and we do have That Grass Looks Greener back to fill the graveyard with a lot of cards. Once per turn, if the opponent has 25 or more cards in the graveyard, you can destroy all their cards. A field nuke is nice, but it’s going to be hard to rely on the opponent having 25 cards in the graveyard. It’s better than what we’ve been getting for these Anniversary cards, but it’s still a gimmick. Fusion Materials are very specific, and while you do get the protection for free if you do summon it, the other effects are harder to make come up, especially the last one. Cool card, these are fun to review, even if they aren’t great.

Clearly, Dragon of Pride and Soul was not enough to celebrate the 25th anniversary, so Konami went even further beyond with an evolved form– closing the week is Ultimate Dragon of Pride and Soul, a level 12 DARK Dragon Fusion monster. Mirroring Blue-Eyes Ultimate Dragon, it’ll take any 3 monsters with both 2500 attack and defense. You’re meant to use the original Dragon of Pride and Soul and Magicians of Bonds and Unity, but given the poor scores we gave those monsters, it’s not a great idea. Instead, you probably could summon it in a janky Despia deck since Dogmatika Fleurdelis, the Knighted, Despian Quaeritis, and The Iris Swordsoul all have the right stats. Whether or not it’s worth it is a different matter (spoiler! It’s not). Ultimate Dragon comes in at a whopping 4500 attack and defense, so if nothing it’s a fantastic stat stick, though it is beaten by Dragon Master Magia.

While it’s Fusion Summoned, Ultimate Dragon is protected from your opponent’s targeting effects and destruction effects, which is extremely helpful; we don’t want our big bad dragon to die immediately, after all, something that plagues a lot of beatstick monsters. Keeping with the 25th anniversary, Ultimate Dragon gains a couple of bonus effects for players having enough cards in the Graveyard. If you have 25 or more cards in the Graveyard, it’ll gain 4500 attack and defense, raising its stats to a ridiculous 9000 across the board (sorry, Vegeta), which will overcome almost anything in terms of raw numbers. Conversely, if your opponent has 25 or more cards in the Graveyard, it gains a non-once per turn effect to destroy all cards your opponent controls. It’s fantastic for boardbreaking, and combined with the other effect, should almost guarantee an OTK. The elephant in the room is the 25 card requirement– as we went over with Magicians and the original Dragon, this is incredibly unreliable. Even playing a dedicated mill deck with enablers like the Ishizu cards will struggle to consistently get that many cards in the Graveyard. Plus, unlike its predecessors, you will still have to go through the trouble of Fusion Summoning Ultimate Dragon, which itself is a herculean task. It’s a very scary and impressive card fitting for the 25th anniversary, but again, it’s more of a novelty than anything you’ll use in a real duel.

+Fantastic stats that can potentially get even higher and good protection
-Extremely difficult to summon
-Bonus effects are unreliable
