Usarctic Polari – Yu-Gi-Oh! Review

Ursarctic Polari

Ursarctic Polari – #ANGU-EN033

Cannot be Synchro Summoned. Must be Special Summoned (from your Extra Deck) by sending 2 monsters you control with a Level difference of 1 to the GY (1 Tuner and 1 non-Tuner). If this card is Special Summoned: You can activate 1 “Ursarctic Big Dipper” directly from your Deck. You can Tribute 1 Level 7 or higher monster; add to your hand, or Special Summon, 1 “Ursarctic” monster from your GY. You can only use each effect of “Ursarctic Polari” once per turn.

Hello Pojo Fans,

Ursarctic Polari starts off our Ursarctic look this week.

Synchro Level 1, requirements are generic, but specific. Tuner and non-Tuner, but you need a difference in level by 1…pretty specific, but not impossible by any means. Activating a card directly from your deck is always good, and Big Dipper is your Field Spell for the archetype: Polari is a monster effect Metaverse. If Polari is Special Summoned after having been summoned you can still get the chance to activate Big Dipper from your deck. The archetype has a “Tribute 1 Level 7 or higher monster” theme, and Polari does that for a Special Summon from your grave. This archetype tributes from the hand to do their Special Summons, making sure your grave will have a target for Polari. In terms of Synchro Monsters within the archetype, Polari gets your strategy going, but it isn’t the best of the Synchro choices.

Polari gets you to your Field Spell and get you a summon/add to your hand from the graveyard. It is the first in a chain of summons you’ll do to make your bigger Synchro Monsters.

Let’s start Ursarctic week with something interesting as we got a one-of-a-kind card, Ursarctic Polari.

Polari is a Level 1 WATER Beast Synchro with 700 ATK and 1000 DEF. Low stats as always on Level 1, being a Beast is nice and WATER is good. The interesting fact is a Level 1 Synchro, meaning you can’t really do the traditional Synchro Summon of a Tuner and a non-Tuner by adding Levels, instead you subtract the Levels of the Tuner and non-Tuner to get the difference to be 1, doesn’t matter which has the higher Level, though in Ursarctic it’s the Tuners with higher Levels. Either way, this can’t be Synchro Summoned and must be summoned with that method, which it not being able to be properly Synchro Summoned and it must being summoned using the Tuner and non-Tuner means no reviving this, which is unfortunate. Upon being summoned, you can activate Ursarctic Big Dipper directly from the Deck, instantly getting you to the archetypal Field Spell. You can finally tribute a Level 7 or higher monster to take an Ursarctic monster in your grave and either add it to your hand or Special Summon it, which the Special Summon might be preferred for the Tuners to get to your Level 7 Synchros, but it at least lets you put the Synchros back in the Extra Deck. Each effect of Polari is a hard once per turn, which is fine I guess. It’s a fairly decent card for what it’s meant to do, especially when you get your cards to ignore the tributing cost. It’s a must for Ursarctic since it’s the best card to help get your boss Synchros out.

Apparently my Friday review didn’t save when I typed it out with the rest of my reviews last week, much to my surprise, but a new week kicks off with Ursarctic Polari.  Ursarctic translates to Bearcti in the OCG (translated from Bearukuti in Japanese) and the Theme of these guys is Water/Beast Monsters with 700 attack or defense.  Attack, in this instance, along with that 1000 defense, isn’t awful on a Level 1.  A Level 1 Synchro kind of seems to defeat the purpose, given needing two Monsters to do so, but this guy works around that.  It can’t be Special Summoned, save from your Extra Deck, by sending two face-up Monsters you control whose Level difference is 1.  So you’re still giving up two Monsters, but not in the Traditional Synchro manner, to drop this Synchro to the Field.  Fun, and although the Level difference is a bit of a snag, it shouldn’t be too difficult to accomplish, either.  Special Summonin this card nets you the activation of the Field Magic for the Deck:  Ursarctic Big Dipper, which is a solid Field card.  It must come directly from your Deck, which is cool, and shouldn’t really be a downside.  Maybe you run just the one, and it happens to not be in your Deck, but aside from that, you should be good.  Tributing a Level 7 or higher Monster lets you Special Summon or add an Ursarctic Monster from your Graveyard back to your Hand.  That’s a great effect, and very open ended as well.  If you don’t have the piece you need to bring back to your Field, add it your Hand, and wait a minute.  This card honestly benefits little to nothing to being a Synchro, but given the relative ease in dropping it and what it can do, I’m a fan.
