I had to read this a couple of times before I noticed what’s arguably the most important part of it: it’s an enchantment. We finally have a free constellation/eerie trigger that doesn’t involve dipping into Mystery Booster playtest cards, for those who would prefer not to. It’s not the absolute strongest land beyond that, but it’s very easy to underestimate the ability to extend your enchantment synergies into your land base – Wizards of the Coast themselves did this with artifact lands, and although there’s nothing comparably powerful or broken for enchantments, this is a card that will do a lot of cool stuff a lot of the time.

This technically isn’t the first of its kind, but Valgavoth’s Lair is still a pretty bold card as the second-ever enchantment land. For the most part, it being an enchantment is more flavor than anything else, given that Duskmourn and its suite of horrors tend to have their toes in being enchantments…and hexproof means that Valgavoth’s Lair will still resist a fair bit of the hate potentially aimed at it. Still, an enchantment land is interesting, and while this isn’t phenomenal, it is whatever color you need at the time, and sometimes that’s all you need it to be.
