Everybody likes creatures that can be upgraded with their own innate abilities. As such cards go, Voice of the Blessed is quite eye-catching. The life-gaining condition is easy to trigger in white and part-white decks, and it’s also worth noting that it doesn’t actually care whether the counters come from its own ability. That means you can take advantage of other cards that make use of them, not to mention abilities like proliferate. The downside is that if your plan goes well, the creature sticks out as something that has to be killed or otherwise dealt with, but if your opponent doesn’t, they’ll lose to it surprisingly fast.

In form and function, this is basically a rare version of Ajani’s Pridemate, albeit with some quirks. The main quirk is that it gets more threatening if it gets enough counters: four makes it evasive, and ten makes it nearly unkillable. Note that the wording on this means it only gains one counter when you gain life, regardless of if it was 1 life or 13 life, but each instance of lifegain will trigger it. Like, for example…if you hit an opponent with three lifelink creatures, you’ll gain life thrice, and so this will trigger thrice.
As far as clocks go, this one is a nicely threatening clock; if you can keep putting life gain on the board, this gets bigger, and white is the color most suited to passive life gain at the expense of your opponents. I think there’s a chance that this maybe can make waves in Modern as part of the erstwhile Soul Sisters deck, but there does appear to be a charming little Orzhov Clerics shell that Voice of the Blessed has found a home in in Standard. I think it’s probably more fun than actually good, but there are several tantalizing payoffs it can offer to the enterprising deckbuilder.

A good card for those few and far between life gain decks, this is a good introductory card to players who want to run more complex decks outside of starter decks and life gain is a good strategy for those players. A cheap creature with positive effects as the game shifts towards the late game, and not being a legendary you can have up to four copies in constructed. Great limited build around as well, it is worth picking up and shifting your strategy in draft to accommodate this card. For more experienced players and decks, this card is a bit too slow and requires the right “build around me” cards that just doesn’t make this seem worth it.
