Game text like Voyage Home’s combined with a mana cost that looks like that invariably gets people’s senses tingling, and it’s pretty justified in this case. The effect is hard to make entirely unfair in smaller card pools, yet as you get the cost down more and more, it feels more and more potentially game-changing. It’s not necessarily easy to access the big reductions, though there are some reasonably clear pathways – for example, I know people have already been testing Voyage Home in Modern alongside the newly-unbanned Mox Opal. Additionally, in casual decks that are willing to run the slightly less optimized or aggressive cards in favor of committing to a theme, the times it works will rival anything Ravager Affinity did in spectacle.

“Affinity for artifacts” is a bit of text infamous for what it’s done to the game in the past, though it feels like recent efforts to rehabilitate it have gone acceptably enough. Voyage Home is overcosted without it and can be very aggressively costed with it, striking me as a bit of a tweak to Thoughtcast (which drew 2 cards for 5 mana, but with affinity). This is certainly a good set for the effect, and with a color-light casting cost, you don’t need to get this to two mana for it to be a solid deal; four or five is acceptable, and a bit of life can also help in a pinch. This is a solid sort of “glue card” that will rarely be a deck’s star, but you will also almost never mind drawing it if you build with it in mind.
