Haywire
Basics: Haywire is a great card if for no other
reason than because it is a 0-cost character.
Constructed play: There is little better than a
turn 1 Haywire with an Advanced hardware.
Everyone thought this card would bring back
Squadron decks by the load, but the sad thing is
there really isn't any room for him. Haywire is
really meant for some sort of crazy equipment
deck...High Voltage comes to mind. A great
card...this is one character that you will
definitely have to build a deck around to an
extent - and that is where this card's strengths
and weaknesses lie.
Limited play: This card isn't really made for
this format. If you are lucky you might get a
piece of usable equipment. If that is the case
then go ahead and add this character to the mix.
However, many times you will find you don't have
equipment worthy of making the cut and this card
will be virtually useless.
Ratings:
MMA constructed - 3.0/5.0 ...It is a free
recruit, regardless.
GA constructed - 3.5/5.0 ...In this format you a
greater chance of using this character to his
full potential.
Limited - 2.0/5.0 ...It all depends on the
equipment.

Haywire,
Suicidal Lover
Haywire has the distinction of being the first
"free"
character ever printed in VS. Obviously, he
works great as an addition to a Squadron No-Hand
deck. His cost of zero means that you can drop
Ape X on turn 1, search out an equip card, then
drop Haywire, equip him, and have two attackers
out on Turn 1, as well as one less card in hand,
and a character that costs you nothing when he's
stunned. However, clever deckbuilders found a
use for him in PC LA, using Secret Sanctuary to
bring him back from the KO'd pile for free. See,
Secret Sanctuary requires to exhaust "any
number" of JLA characters you control, and "any
number" can include zero. Then, you can bring
back a charcter from the KO'd pile to your hand
if it's cost is less than or equal to the
willpower of the characters you exhausted. Since
you exhausted zero characters with zero
willpower, you can bring back a zero cost
character...i.e., Haywire. Then you can recruit
him for free, and then KO him for Poison Ivy's
effect, allowing you to search out a location.
You can also exhaust him and another character
for Phantom Stranger, and he can be searched out
with The Ring Has Chosen as well.
In Limited, he's not a high pick. I watched the
draft tables during Day 2, and watched Haywires
wheel around the entire table in favor of cards
that had more utility. Your hand is almost never
empty in Sealed, and putting an equip card on
such a small body can be a waste. He's not
horrible in a pinch, or if you need a free body
to exhaust for an effect, but otherwise, pass
him to the rare drafter.
