Time sure
flies when you're having fun, doesn't it?
PC LA was just a few days ago, and now it's
already Sneak Preview time for Legion of
Superheroes. At PC San Francisco, the Ivy League
deck showed how powerful discard effects can be
at shutting down your opponent's options. Now we
have the Future Foes, an entire team that looks
to be based around the idea of getting cards out
of your opponent's hand.
However, it's not a strict discard theme. The
Future Foes are fair, they'll let you keep that
card in your hand...in exchange for some pretty
sick effects.
Chain Lightning is an excellent example of this.
Chain Lightning gives a -2 DEF to any attacker
or defender, then forces your opponent to either
discard a card or suffer another -2 to that
character's DEF.
Even if it just said "target attacker or
defender gets
-2 DEF this attack" it'd still be a playable
card, especially in Limited. The ability to then
screw your opponent further makes this card
really interesting.
The safest option is to use this card in
situations when the initial -2 DEF is going to
be enough to ensure that your opponent's
character stuns. That way, your opponent can't
pitch a redundant card and save their character.
It's also a good play when you're attacking down
the curve, and the opponent has to choose
between losing a card, or losing another 2
points of breakthrough. Better yet, just wait
until the opponent has no cards in hand (I'm
looking at you,
Squad) and then it's a guaranteed -4 DEF. You
can also sucker them in, attacking up the curve,
playing Chain Lightning, letting them discard a
card to avoid the extra -2 DEF, then drop
another pump (or another Chain Lightning), and
get the stun anyway. With the other discard
effects that Future Foes will give you, the
remaining cards your opponent has will become
more precious, and that forces them into some
difficult decisions.
I'm already looking forward to this card in the
Limited formats, as playable commons are what
turn a good deck into a great deck. The more
cards you get out of your opponent's hand early,
the fewer options they have, and the less you
have to worry about.
It's a Future Foes-stamped card, but the art has
a Future Foe getting blasted by two Legionaires...no
love for the bad guys, even on their own plot
twists.
That's bad beats. See you next Wednesday for
another Legion preview! |

Chain
Lightning
Ooh, a new sexy card from Legions. Let's see
what it can do...
Chain Lightning
Plot Twist/1
Play Chain Lightning only if you control a
Future Foes character.
Target attacker or defender gets -2 DEF this
attack and an additional -2 DEF this attack
unless an opponent discards a card.
Wow. I don't know what the heck Future Foes are,
but the card itself sounds fantastic. The fact
that you can use it when they are attacking OR
defending makes the card super versatile. You
automatically get -2 DEF for their character and
as an additional bonus, they can choose another
-2 DEF or discard a card. Talk about a win-win
situation. And I like how it says "unless AN
opponent discards a card". That would be silly
in a multiplayer format.
DC Modern: 4/5
Silver Age: 4/5
Golden Age: 3/5
Overall: 3/5
Very nice preview card. Very nice indeed...

I think what we have here is a fairly decent
limited card, but nothing that will see huge
play in Constructed. Anytime you can add to
offense or subtract from defense anything 2 or
more, you have a trick that is limited
playable. We are assuming that Future Foes will
be a solid enough team to make it playable, but
if so I would generally think it will be.
Expect your opponent to discard kinda often as
they will seldom want -4, especially if they are
on defense. I like that it’s multi-useful,
working both ways. That will make this a card
that makes most limited decks. In Constructed,
usually a card has to do a bit more to make the
cut. Possibly in some Modern Age tournaments,
but forget anything outside of that.
