Strength In Numbers? I Don’t Think So A Marvel Knights Preview by Scott Gerhardt Up until this point of the game, it has almost always been advantageous to have more characters rather than less. Generally, the person controlling more characters than the other would likely win out provided they both hit their curve. Today’s preview card may show a slightly changed trend to that theory. Is Upper Deck telling us that we can stand alone and still make a difference in the game? Will this be a trend? Well, I give you – Zeitgeist:
My first inclination when I see this card is to not like it. It’s a 6 drop 12/12 that only does it’s thing when it’s standing alone. Mind you, it’s extraordinary in that situation, but not one that will happen often….or will it? Immediately, Gamma Bomb comes to mind. Sure, up to that point, it might be a bit difficult to pull off a situation where this guy is good, but let’s look at the turn after a Gamma Bomb, regardless of who has initiative. Both players have no characters at all. You opponent will likely play 2 characters – one good, the other kinda small. Playing nothing more than Zeitgeist, you will be able to wreck his board and his endurance with one fail swoop. You are very likely to be looking at a post-Bomb attack for approximately 16-18, and very little they can do about it. Plus, if this doesn’t get the job done, you can just play another Bomb and start the process over again. Even on it’s own Zeigeist is nothing special, but certainly not bad. I’ve seen a lot worse than a 12/12 with range for 6. Without his Cosmic counter, he’s still a standard beater that can get the job done. The bad part about this card is without a strategy to utilize it’s ability, you generally have to be in a position that you are losing the game before it’s good. Then again, I have not seen all the cards yet, so I don’t completely know whether or not there will be other cards in the set that back-up this strategy, or if he is just a lone wolf in the night. The release for this set is this Saturday. I encourage each and every one of you to go out and find a Marvel Knights preview location. To find a location nearest you, check out the following URL: http://www.upperdeckentertainment.com/op/sneakpreview/mk_schedule.aspx There are a LOT of locations and surely one close enough to you. As for myself, my wife and I will be in Las Vegas representing www.ShuffleAndCut.com at the 10k tournament (as well as Shonen Jump Challenge for Yu-Gi-Oh! the next day). I encourage everyone who can make this event to come down. It will be a great weekend of nonstop Vs System action – fun for the serious and casual player alike. For more information on this event, please go to this URL: Hope to see everyone there – if you can make it, come by and say hello to us! Until next time, keep playing!!! |
