Where There’s A Will, There Are Bodies Everywhere
by Scott Gerhardt
April 20, 2005

Welcome to the Green Lantern Previews! Once again, the great people at Metagame and Upper Deck have given us a couple of cards to review. One is for today, and the other will hit on April 28th.

Today we get to learn a new ability: Willpower. What is willpower? Well, the answer is simple – nothing. Absolutely nothing. Cards that have Willpower do absolutely nothing special because they have Willpower. Now does this mean Willpower is just useless text to amuse Upper Deck and the rest of the card-playing world? Hardly. Each character with Willpower has a strength of that Willpower. Example: Willpower 6 would be a character that has 6 as it’s Willpower. Now as I stated, Willpower on it’s own does absolutely nothing. Willpower with other abilities, though, can simply be brutal.

Please reference Remoni-Notra <> Star Sapphire:

Yes, she has Willpower 4, and it does nothing. But, when you read further, you find out that her Willpower starts Knocking out other things. Not only does this ability work for her, it works for ALL your attacking characters, and NONE of your opponents. So now you can keep attacking down the curve, and when you whack someone, they go away. No recovery, no saving it, no nothing. Scoop the card and put it in the grave. Strategies involving reinforcement…done. Strategies involving having a number of characters on the board….done. Strategies involving winning the game….done. Okay, maybe not that far, but you get the point. Remoni-Notri is certainly playable, having a 9 attack in the 5 drop slot, and with flight and range, nobody is safe from her wrath. Yeah, she’ll likely stun, but it will be worth it to cause the havoc. I’d like to see more Emerald Enemies, especially ones with Willpower to see how this deck pans out. I think you’ll find it to be somewhat on the vicious side, and something that you’re going to have to contend with very, very soon.

So what else does Willpower have in store for us? Well, I must be honest – I don’t know. I have one more preview card, and I’ll give you a hint: The card doesn’t have to be a character to take advantage of characters with Willpower. I see a very strong Willpower theme developing in the set (maybe it’s because I’ve only seen 2 cards, and they both are highly Willpower reliant).

I can’t tell you anything more about next week’s card except that a few of you control players might have to pick up your jaws from the ground. Even agro players are gonna like this little goodie.

Until next week, keep playing!
