The Name of the Game is – YOU!
Part I
by Sith Dragon
August 12, 2005
This is the first
in a series of articles I will be writing. I hope to
keep these a bit shorter, but we shall see. These
articles are going to be designed more for the beginning
players in the Vs. universe, but I hope that some of the
seasoned vets out there may take a thing or two away
form these articles as well.
OK. So you are going to play Vs. Well, you are off to a
good start J! Anyway, I think the first thing to look at
is who are you? It may seem like a really stupid
question, but stop and think about it. I have seen many
a good player come into a TCG/CCG, have plenty of skill,
yet they suffer beating after beating, get frustrated
and quit. Many times they don’t ask themselves who am I?
Why am I here?
In looking at yourself and why you are playing the game,
it will better set up your style of game play, the decks
you will run, and a more realistic expectation of how
you are going to do in a tournament. There are basically
three types of people that play these games; those that
play for whimsy, those that play for fun, and those that
play to win.
I will discuss each of these over the next couple of
articles in detail as I go.
I’m going to start with those that play to win, as this
is the easiest group to identify. Those that play to win
will not be happy with anything but the best. They won’t
ever play anything but the most broken decks, and if
they do switch, it will be to whatever the hot new deck
is at the time. A great many of these people (not all),
are the people that are on the top lists in regional and
national events.
This doesn’t mean they are jerks by any means, but
rarely will any of them pick up a lesser deck to see
what they could do with it or because they like a thing.
Listen for these people to often whine because the only
reason they lost was the other person got lucky, and of
course they never win through luck. Of course they got
lucky! Luck is a part of any game you play. You have a
60-card deck – You need a six-drop and the two cards you
draw are the 1&2 drops you missed earlier. You are
screwed! Or you happen to draw the last card in your
deck that you have to have, and you win. Either way,
luck dominates any game.
If you are this type of player then my articles will do
little for you. These people will run Sentinel, pure
teen titan, cosmic cops, gamma bomb etc. If this is the
type of person you are, find a deck list of these decks
and copy it. There is little room for growth here.
As you can tell the ‘must win’ crowd is the group that I
personally have the least amount of patience with.
Let me clarify one thing before the hate mail rolls in.
Not all these people are jerks as I said earlier.
You can find some real masters of the game in this group
and good teachers, but per capita these are the people
that are going to be snobbish and conceited, especially
when interacting with the other two player types. (Okay,
so much for short)
Next week I will discuss those who play strictly for
fun, so until then feel free to send rants, raves or
comments to
sithdragon13@yahoo.com. And please put something
about Pojo in the subject line so I know you aren’t spam
mail.
So battle on!
"Are you threatening me, Master Jedi?"
