The Name of the Game is – YOU!
Part II
by Sith Dragon
August 19, 2005
Here we go with part 2 of my series on helping you
figure out what kind of player you are. Last time I
talked about the ‘MUST WIN’ players. All else aside
there is not much depth to those players, as they will
always run what they have to in order to win. Today, I’m
going to talk about their mirror opposite – the player
that plays for absolute fun.
These are the players that I often admire the most. I am
not talking about players that still haven’t learned
what they are doing and have decks that run the gambit
of characters and metagame ideas. This is talking about
those players out there that have all the skill to be
competitive in a tourney, but instead choose to stick
with the cards they love.
There is one gentleman that plays in the tourneys around
here. He is good enough that if he went with more
mainstream cards he would do very well for himself, yet
he chooses to run teams like X-statics, decks with four
different teams or more, and yes – he always has Skrull
in there somewhere. He has won a couple good games here
and there, but generally, he goes down in a flaming ball
of defeat. Every week he comes back and does it again. I
can see the frustration sometimes, but he knows he’s not
going to beat many decks with what he runs.
If you are one of these players, then mega-kudos to you.
You are out there doing what you love to do, and can be
comfortable with the results. About the only advise I
can give you is keep it up. My forthcoming deck building
articles may help you streamline what you are doing, but
weaker decks are weaker decks and just won’t take down
the tier I decks. Just keep playing your heart out and
enjoy the game.
OK – short and sweet this week. Next week I am going to
talk about the kind of player that is the hybrid of
these two types: the player who wants to win but wants
to do it on their terms instead of running the broken
decks. Then after that I will get into how to build a
deck.
