DC Origins Review: Lady Shiva, Master Assassin

 

When the League of Assassins were introduced as one of the teams to be included into the DC Origins set many thought them to be the top contender against the Brotherhood decks.  The League of Assassins is heavy on location control and manipulation.  They also have the ultimate weapon against any character in the game, Lady Shiva- Master Assassin.  Here’s the breakdown:

Recruit: 7

ATK 13 DEF 13

Recruit Lady Shiva only if you control Ra’s al Ghul

Activate à KO target character.  Use this power only during your attack step.

 

At first glance, Lady Shiva’s 13/13 stats are the lowest for any 7 drop character, but she is not called the “master assassin” for just any reason.  Her recruitment requires Ra’s al Ghul to be in play.  This should be no problem as there are 3 versions of Ra’s al Ghul for your enjoyment.  Her effect is what earns her the title of Master Assassin.  With the ability to simply exhaust her she is able to KO any character during your attack phase.  What came to my mind when I first saw her was a possible team up with the Fantastic Four allowing her to ready with the help of cosmic radiations.  That’s a potential 5 character KO, which pretty much means an open field for your characters to attack.  She is able to take down any of the big characters if the game gets into the later turns.  This ability really outshines all of the cons she has.  She has a few drawbacks, starting with the requirement to control Ra’s al Ghul.  The second thing she lacks in is her ATK/DEF, at a very low 13/13 I am assuming this would make her balance out due to her incredible effect.  The last thing that holds her back is using her effect only during your attack step.  So if you are running Lady Shiva and plan to drop her on 7 then you will want to gain control of the initiative.  If you are going to wait till turn 8 to assassinate the likes of Superman, another Ra’s al Ghul or some other giant 8 drop character then give your opponent control of the initiative.  Overall, I give Lady Shiva, Master Assassin a 9/10.  Her stats are low and she requires Ra’s al Ghul but having her on the field just makes VS so much easier.
