Simply Amazing! (Spider-Man)- Marvin Aquino
Overlooked and Underrated
Article 5: Quite Amazing!!!
“With great power comes great
responsibility”
Apparently I was very irresponsible when I fused
together two Spider-Friends deck and brought it to test play with me at my local
card shop. I was actually doing quite well with it against the likes of
the Brotherhood, X-Men, and Fantastic Four. I managed to gain a win
against the X-Men and Four teams, but got swept away on turn 7 by the
brotherhood. As luck would come, I was able to get recruit 7 Spider-Man
out with the help of Twist of Fate (which is a pretty good card). Let’s
look at the red and blue web-slinger.
Spider-Man, The Amazing
Spider-Man
Recruit:
7
ATK 14
DEF
16
Discard a Spider-Friends character
card from your hand à exhaust
target character if it has a cost less than or equal to the cost of the card you
discarded.
What I failed to realize is that…IT’S NOT AN ACTIVATED
EFFECT! During the turn 7’s against the two brotherhood decks I
encountered I held in my hand a Nova (6 recruit), Punisher (4 recruit), 2
Daredevil’s (5 recruit). Who was I against? 5 drop Magneto, 4 drop
Sabertooth, 5 drop Quicksilver and the different 2 and 3 drop Brotherhood
characters. Had I realized that I could have used up all the characters in
my hand I would have taken over the Brotherhood.
7 recruit Spider-Man is just what it says it is,
amazing. Its effect does not force Spider-Man to exhaust which is
extremely useful especially against the weenie rush brotherhood decks. The
14 ATK is not something to brag about, but with the help of everyone’s favorite
high priced card Savage Beatdown Spider-Man is sure to cause enough breakthrough
to end the game. What boggles my mind about him is that fact that this
version of Spider-Man has neither range nor flight. They gave Invisible
Woman flight and range because of the fact she can make force fields and throw
them at her foes. What about Spidey! He can shoot sticky web stuff
from his wrists and swing like Tarzan around the city. That alone beats
silly force fields. Ok, so there was my rant. Spider-Man is
practically broken if your holding high cost Spider-friends characters in your
hand. Even on the turns you do not own the initiative his power does not
restrict you to a specific phase. His high DEF of 16 protects him from
popular 7 drops such as Wolverine, Berserker Rage and Sub-Mariner, Ally of
Doom. His power prevents just about any lower cost characters from
attacking him. With every pro, there must be a con, especially in the game
of VS system. His ATK of 14 for a 7 drop is fairly weak; in fact, it is
one of the weakest along side of Mr. Fantastic. Also, like I ranted about
in the beginning he does not possess flight or range. A small setback for
his power limits you to use Spider-friends only, but with the help of a Marvel
Team Up and hopefully a few team up cards in his upcoming set we can see even
more effectiveness for Spider-Man. I rated this card 8/10 for its ability
to exhaust everyone on your opponent’s side of the field before you attack and
its solid DEF against popular 7 drops.
