(Carlsbad, CA), December 6, 2004 - Ryan Jones (Long Beach, CA), a computer programmer, won the big check ($40k) at the second stop on Upper Deck Entertainment's Marvel & DC Vs. System Trading Card Game (TCG) $1 Million Pro Circuit in Los Angeles, CA this past weekend. Upper Deck Entertainment wrote checks totaling more than $256,000 in prize money for the top 75 competitors.
Jones, a veteran trading card game player, beat Mark Slack three games to two in the best of five finals to capture the Championship title and the large cash prize of $40k. Ryan Jones outplayed a strong field of competitors in fierce head-to-head battles earning the second ever UDE Vs. System Pro Circuit crown. There were 104 players that made it to the money round in Day Two, while the Top Eight advanced to Day Three where the big money was awarded. Ryan Jones is the newest member of the VsRealms professional team.
"I started out casually playing the Vs. System TCGs almost about the same time as the game came on the market. It's great to have a competitive environment in which to play the top players, and winning near my hometown has been fantastic," said Ryan Jones.
Jones deck was based on the Teen Titans, which featured cards like Robin, Terra, Starfire, Hawk, Dove and "Teen Titans Go!", a key card in his deck. Jones beat many deck types during the tournament, including decks using Superman, Batman, Wolverine and Spider-Man.
The competition, held over three days at the second annual GenCon Socal convention, pitted nearly 300 of the best DC and Marvel Vs. System Trading Card Game players from around the world. Players traveled as far as Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, United Kingdom, France, Italy, Canada, Germany, Puerto Rico, Mexico, and the United States to make the competition a true world tournament.
"The Upper Deck Pro Circuit keeps growing around the world as more people start playing the Vs. System trading card game," said Jeff Donais, Group Director of Organized Play and Game Development for Upper Deck Entertainment. "Players love the superior game design of the Vs. System and the chance to compete for $1 million dollars."
