Darkmoon Faire Amsterdam Draws Record Number of Visitors

Billy Postlethwait Earns Top Prize

at Upper Deck’s 2009 World of Warcraft®

TCG and Miniatures World Championships

Floridian takes home $50,000 in first-place money!

Carlsbad, CA (October 15, 2009) In a field rife with Mage, one player proved to be the king of casters: Darkmoon Faire Columbus winner Billy Postlethwait – better known as “Billy P.” – emerged victorious at Upper Deck’s third annual World of Warcraft® Trading Card Game (TCG) World Championships. The competition, held at the Austin Convention Center in Texas from October 9 through 11, drew qualified participants from 26 different countries, but it was the U.S.A.’s own Billy P. who took home the top prize of $50,000.

“We are extremely exited about last weekend’s results,” said Dan Bojanowski, Upper Deck’s World of Warcraft TCG brand manager. “The World of Warcraft player base continues to be extremely popular among both competitive players and fans of the World of Warcraft online game. And this year’s World Championships certainly demonstrated that fact. As for the competition, our hats go off to Billy Postlethwait.”

Postlethwait, who hails from Winter Park, Florida, piloted his take on Alliance Mage to a 7-1 record on Day 1 of the tournament, and dropped only one match during the Draft portion on Day 2. Billy P. chose Spellweaver Jihan over Loraala the Frigid and never looked back, crushing most of his mirror matches thanks to her flip's synergy with The Taste of Arcana. And even though Postlethwait began the finals down 0-2, he was able to rally and win the next three games out from under runner-up Matt Markoff of Randolph, New Jersey. For his part, Markoff kept his “Top 8” streak alive by making his third Worlds showing, breaking the record he set in Paris a year ago. Mage was the order of the weekend, with six variants on the class in the Top 8. For his second-place finish, Markoff took home $25,000.

To qualify for the 2009 World of Warcraft® TCG World Championships, players competed in numerous tournaments held around the globe, including National tournaments and Darkmoon Faire Championship tournaments. Winners of those contests represented their respective countries at last weekend’s World Championships. Players also qualified by earning Honor Ranking by participating in Upper Deck-sanctioned tournaments throughout the year. Meanwhile, in the first-ever World of Warcraft® Miniatures Game World Championships, the best players on the planet took part and the competition proved fierce. In fact, the field of Top 8 finishers would have proven to be an imposing lineup for any would-be challenger as standouts like Ben Isgur, Michael Pozsgay, Hans Joachim Hoh, Derek Richardson and Michael Ayars battled it out. With several Darkmoon Faire victories, Realm Championships, and Top 8 finishes between them, the group certainly represented the world's finest World of Warcraft® Miniatures players. In the end, however, it was Richardson from Livonia, Michigan, who prevailed, defeating Pozsgay's triple Zomm Hopeslayer team with his Jaina Proudmoore-based team featuring two Elanna Starbreeze. The animals were just too much for the Rogues, and Team RIW’s Richardson secured top honors and the winner’s purse of $10,000. For his runner-up finish, Pozsgay, who resides in Mount Prospect, Illinois, earned $7,000.

Every World of Warcraft® player participating in any of the 2009 World Championship tournaments automatically received a Thunderhead Hippogryph Loot™ card from the very first expansion: Heroes of Azeroth. Other participation prizes included an exclusive commemorative play mat and Extended Art promo cards.
