Upper Deck’s 2009 World of Warcraft® TCG and Miniatures World Championships Set for October 9-11 in Austin, Texas
more than $300,000 in cash and prizes are at stake!
Carlsbad, CA (October 2, 2009) – Bringing one of the world’s most popular trading card game (TCG) championships back to the United States, the Upper Deck Company is proud to announce that it will be hosting the 2009 World of Warcraft® TCG and Collectible Miniatures Games World Championships at the Austin Convention Center in Texas from October 9 through 11. The fast-approaching World of Warcraft® TCG World Championships boast amazing prizes for the top finishers, plus Loot™ cards and other prized offerings for every participant.
“The World of Warcraft player base continues to grow among both competitive players and fans of the World of Warcraft online game. The upcoming World Championship weekend offers events and tournaments for everyone, and we're very pleased to bring this event to Austin,” said Scott Gaeta, Upper Deck’s director of Organized Play.
Players can look forward to the same exciting events and atmosphere that they have come to expect from Upper Deck’s World of Warcraft® TCG events. In addition to the main world championship competition, players of all levels can participate in the highly popular World of Warcraft® Darkmoon Faire throughout the weekend, which includes more than 30 different tabletop tournaments, carnival games, and activities for anyone interested in Blizzard Entertainment’s massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) or the TCG.
The event is free and open to the public. Fans of the World of Warcraft® online game can learn to play both the TCG and Miniatures games from our experienced demo staff, and win prizes including starter decks and Loot™ cards simply by showing up.
“Austin was the first city to host our traveling Darkmoon Faire tournament series in 2007," said Ben Drago, Upper Deck’s marketing manager for Organized Play. “As the World of Warcraft TCG continues to grow in popularity and expand its player base worldwide, it only seems natural to bring it back to Texas.”
Every World of Warcraft® player participating in either of the 2009 World Championship Tournaments will automatically receive a Thunderhead Hippogryph Loot™ card from the very first expansion, Heroes of Azeroth. Other participation prizes include an exclusive commemorative play mat, Extended Art promo cards, and other sought-after prizes.
The grand-prize winner of the 2009 World of Warcraft® TCG World Championship Tournament will take home $50,000 in cash and the character that the World Champion plays in Blizzard Entertainment's World of Warcraft MMORPG will be immortalized on an upcoming World of Warcraft TCG hero or ally card. Once the card is complete, the original art for the card will be awarded to the overall World Champion. The grand-prize winner will also receive a Spectral Tiger Loot™ card and an invitation to compete in the World of Warcraft® TCG World Championship Tournament in 2010.

To qualify for the 2009 World of Warcraft® TCG World Championship Tournament, players compete in numerous tournaments held around the globe, including regional tournaments and Darkmoon Faire championship tournaments. Winners of these contests represent their respective countries at the World Championship Tournament event. Players can also qualify for National and Continental Championship Tournaments with “honor ranking points” or “rating points” earned by playing in Upper Deck-sanctioned tournaments.
The 2009 World of Warcraft® Miniatures World Championships Tournament is open to all players. The top finishers from the Continental and National Championships have qualified directly to the second day of competition, where they will meet up with the players with the best records from Friday.
