Wightbaking – #BLVO-EN035

This card’s name becomes “Skull Servant” while in the GY. If a Level 3 or lower Zombie monster(s) you control would be destroyed by battle or card effect, you can discard this card, instead. If this card is sent to the GY: You can add 2 monsters with different names from your Deck to your hand, except “Wightbaking”, that are either “Skull Servant” or specifically list “Skull Servant” in their text, then discard 1 card. You can only use this effect of “Wightbaking” once per turn.

Hello Pojo Fans,

Kind all over the place this week on Pojo, but we’ll run with it, starting this week with Wightbaking.

Skull Servant have always been a rouge fan-favorite deck for fun and sometimes having meta potential on the regional level. Wightbaking is a One For One target, Mezuki partner, as well as Zombie Master and the rest of Zombie support. Wightbaking becomes Skull Servant while in the grave, giving you more options for Skull Servant-based cards. Protection ability from the hand for Level 3 and lower Zombie monster(s) helps combat battle or effect destruction, and the “monster(s)” at the end expands the reach of Wightbaking to stuff like Lightning Storm and Torrential Tribute. A searcher for the Skull Servant strategy, getting two different cards that involve Skull Servant in a way each time Wightbaking hits the grave will help you get to those monsters in a more direct way, other than stuff like Sangan or WoTBF. The discard cost off of Wightbaking is meant to put more “Skull Servant” monsters into your grave, thus powering up King of the Skull Servant. Discard to protect your lower Zombie monsters, get the search, Link Summon using it, get your search. Downsides are pretty obvious: low ATK, only usable in the archetype, if you don’t have any lower level Zombie monsters then discarding it isn’t possible, though most of the main monsters within this archetype fall in that category, but you’re out of luck as well for Xyz and Link monsters.

A monster that is highly serachable, easily summoned, TONS of support behind it thanks to Type and Attribute, and it is a 2-for-2 off it hitting the grave in any fashion makes Wightbaking a pretty good card and a must for the archetype.

To wrap up Blazing Vortex, let’s take a look at some nice support cards for various archetypes this set gave us, staring off with some Skull Servant support: Wightbaking.

Wightbaking is a Level 1 DARK Zombie with 300 ATK and 200 DEF. Standard low Level 1 stats, DARK is great, Zombie is great. Wightbaking’s name becomes Skull Servant while in the graveyard, which is something you want to see on all the Skull Servant support. If a Level 3 or lower Zombie monster(s) you control would be destroyed, you can discard this card instead. Protection for low-level monsters doesn’t seem too great, but in Skull Servants it is actually perfect to keep your King of the Skull Servants safe from destruction effects considering he’s your win condition. Sending this from hand to grave also triggers Wightbaking’s second effect where if it’s sent to the graveyard, you can add 2 monsters with different names from your Deck to your hand, besides other copies of Wightbaking, that are either Skull Servant himself or monsters that list Skull Servant in their text, which all the Skull Servant support does, but then you got to discard a card. This is overall fine to get to your King of the Skull Servants and other Skull Servant monsters, and the discard can trigger Wightprince to send a Skull Servant and The Lady in Wight from the Deck to the grave to help make your King of the Skull Servants stronger. Wightbaking does everything you want in Skull Servants to help protect the King and make him stronger as well. Each effect is a hard once per turn, because you can get the King to insane ATK fast otherwise. Either way, you max this out in Skull Servant Decks since all the names are appreciated, especially good ones.

Skull Servant’s long lost…whatever relation these two are, presents Wightbaking to kick off an assorted support week.  Everything here, minus the name, matches the original Skull Servant point for point.  This guy, as well as his counterpart benefit from a sickening amount of Zombie support.  Food for Zombies and King of the Skull Servants and more gives this guy a ton of use in a specific or even not so specific Zombie Deck.  This guy protects your weenie Zombie(s) from Battle and Effect destruction by discarding itself from your Hand to your Grave   Which is amazing and perhaps scary.  Pun intended.  You can also fetch two Skull Servant cards from your Deck, except this, or cards specifically listing SS in its text.  Plus you get to discard after that, which in Zombies, is just surreally fabulous.  This card does a LOT and helps makes Zombies and SS Hybrid Decks much better.

Art:  4/5  Lots of ways to quip at this but I’ll say…Bonfire of the Skulls it looks like?
