Yu-Gi-Oh Duel Overload Review – What You Should Know

The remnants of the Link Vrains Packs are finally here. Hello Pojo Readers, Crunch$G here to tell you what you should know about Duel Overload. Duel Overload is a $30 set that gives you 6 packs of 5 Ultra Rare cards as well as a giant card based off the manga artstyle. Overall there are 56 new cards in here with 30 Link Monsters, 23 other imports, and 3 World Premieres. We also got a grand total of 44 reprints of good staples, old cards with lack of printings, and necessities for several different strategies. There’s a lot of variety in this set, so there is most likely something in here for everyone, so let’s take a look and see what we got all together.

Oversized Manga Cards

The first thing I will mention are the 6 different oversized manga art cards you can get. Of course these cannot be used in a Duel, mostly cause they’d stick out like a sore thumb in your Deck, but they are pretty cool for collectors of oversized cards. You got Blue-Eyes White Dragon and Dark Magician Girl in their Movie Pack artworks, The Dark Magicians from Legendary Duelists: Magical Hero, Stardust Dragon in its original artwork, and then you got Cyber Dragon Infinity and Tour Guide from the Underworld both in their alternate artworks. Each box will come with 1 of these cards, so I imagine on average you’d get 2 of each per case. I’m sure these are items that’ll be worth a little bit of value after a few years, so have them early I’d say.

Link Monsters Galore

The biggest selling point of this set was probably the grand total of 30 new Links we were getting in this set, most of which were from the three Link Vrains Packs in the OCG so we can finally have them all, and many of which were long awaited. A Malefic Army

For the first time since the Bonds Beyond Time Movie Pack, we see more support for the Malefic archetype with new cards as well as cards from the movie. Finally, Malefic Territory is a Continuous Spell that upon activation can let you activate Malefic World from the Deck and while it is in the Field Zone, neither player can target a card(s) in the Field Zone for effects, the Malefic monster effect of “There can only be 1 face-up “Malefic” monster on the field” becomes “There can only be 1 face-up “Malefic monster on the field with the same name”, and it negates the effects of all your Malefic monsters during the Battle Phase.

Cubics Ascent

From one movie to another, we go from Malefics to Cubics with more new cards and the remaining movie cards. Surprise World Premieres

A last minute announcement from Konami was 3 cards in this set that were being printed for the first time ever. Traptrix Genliesa is a Level 4 that’s unaffected by Hole Normal Traps, and can tribute itself to set 2 Hole Normal Traps (1 from the Deck and 1 from the graveyard) with different names to your field, but they’re banished when they leave the field. Hollow Giants is a Continuous Trap that can only be activated when both players control a monster Special Summoned from the Extra Deck and it negates the effects of all monsters Special Summoned from the Extra Deck, then when a monster is destroyed by battle involving 2 monsters Special Summoned from the Extra Deck, this card is sent to the graveyard and the player that controlled the destroyed monster takes 1000 damage. Finally, Mayakashi Mayhem is a Continuous Trap that if a Zombie Synchro is Special Summoned, except from the Extra Deck and even during the Damage Step, you can activate the effect to either draw a card, set a Mayakashi Spell/Trap from the Deck excluding another Mayhem, send a monster the opponent controls with the lowest ATK to the grave (your choice if tied), or burn the opponent for 800 damage.

Alternate Arts

Another piece we recently saw in the OCG was some of the new alternate arts, which we got all of except for Dark Magician Girl the Dragon Knight. In this set, we had new artworks for Tour Guide from the Underworld, Chaos Dragon Levanieer, Cyber Dragon Infinity, and Sky Striker Ace – Kagari. Infinity and Tour Guide are always good reprints, Chaos Dragon really needed one, but Kagari didn’t really need the reprint after Sky Strikers were hit if it wasn’t for it getting an alternate art. Each artwork does look pretty nice, so I’m sure they’re all something players can appreciate while also getting necessary reprints.

Noteworthy Reprints

Now we get to the other 40 reprints in this set that aren’t alternate artworks. We got a bunch of reprints of high value cards in the current environment before this set. Vanity’s Ruler really needed a reprint since it was last printed in Cyberdark Impact and in a Champion Pack. Gigaplant gets its first reprint ever to make sure Phantom Darkness wasn’t the only way to get it. Swap Frog gets a foil print that isn’t an Ultimate Rare from an OTS Pack. Wattgiraffe gets its first print since The Shining Darkness. Wightmare gets its first print since being a short printed Common in Starstrike Blast. Blackwing – Zephyros the Elite finally gets a foil print outside Duelist Pack: Crow. Scrap Orthros is finally accessible outside Extreme Victory. Madolche Magileine has needed a reprint since Return of the Duelist where it was originally printed, and same goes from Madolche Puddingcess Chocolat-a-la-mode from Crossed Souls, since the archetype has support in Eternity Code. Destiny HERO – Celestial finally has a foil print outside Destiny Soldiers. Secret Six Samurai – Fuma, Magical Musketeer Caspar, and Magical Musketeer Starfire are finally reprinted from Spirit Warriors. Witchcrafter Madame Verre and Witchcrafter Creation is reprinted from Infinity Chasers in time for the Eternity Code support. Fantastical Dragon Phantazmay is a good reprint, even with Master Rule 2020 coming up. Sauravis, the Ancient and Ascended is a good hand trap that missed the 2017 Mega Tins meaning it was only in Invasion: Vengeance. The Last Warrior from Another Planet and King Dragun both needed reprints for over a decade. Super Vehicroid – Stealth Union finally has a holo print outside Gladiator’s Assault and has another print besides Duelist League. Chaos Goddess is finally printed outside The Shining Darkness in time for Toon Chaos. PSY-Framelord Omega and Daigusto Emeral can always use more reprints. Number 27: Dreadnought Dreadnoid, Salamangreat Almiraj, Double Evolution Pill, Cyber Emergency, and Golden Castle of Stromberg are all cards needing of reprints from Battles of Legend sets. Dingrisu, the Orcust of the Evening Star is good to have reprinted before the new Orcust card in Eternity Code. It’s always nice to have a foil print of Mystical Space Typhoon, Terraforming, and Compulsory Evacuation Device. Magic Formula finally has a foil print that isn’t worth an arm and a leg for collectors. Deck Lockdown and Cybernetic Overflow get long overdue foil prints. Zombie World needed a reprint since its other foil print was worth a lot. Hysteric Sign reprinted is useful for Harpie players. Cynet Mining is a great reprint for all Cyberse Decks. Paleozoic Dinomischus is reprinted in foil outside an older OTS Pack, plus it’s upgraded. Finally we get a reprint for the second year in a row for Infinite Impermanence, which was very necessary.

In Conclusion

This is the best March reprint set we’ve probably had so far. All these Link Monsters are good for pleasing many different players of many different strategies. It’s nice to get the new Cubic and Malefic cards finally. The other imports have some good things. The exclusives are great, especially the Traptrix and Mayakashi cards. Also, we got a bunch of reprints for cards that haven’t been printed in years, have needed their first foil print or just another foil print in general, and necessary staples and cards for specific strategies. Also those manga-style cards are nice. There’s a lot of good value in this set due to so many great cards, which is why many players have ordered cases of this set (me included, which I’ve never done before now). The set is just that good and it’ll be hard to top with any other set this year or any future reprint sets that also give new cards.

Thanks for Reading,
