The Top Ten CRAZIEST Name Changes~
KuroKarasu
Heyo, all! Having
seen the Japanese versions of English cards, I began to realize something: Some
name changes are very weird! Here's the list of the top ten CRAZIEST changes
that I have seen, and I'm sorry if I got it in the wrong order.
10. Gemini Elf-
There are two elves, for one thing. Another thing is that, since Japanese is a
phoenetic language (I think?) , the "Gemini" was being pronounced like "Geminae"
would be in Latin. Indeed, since adjectives have to agree in case, number, and
gender, "Geminae" would be the correct form. Just a little Latin lesson, there.
9. Valkyrion the
Magna Warrior- Wow, pointless lengthening, abound! "Magnet Valkyrion" was MUCH
shorter, and besides, that "Magna" does not agree in case, number, and gender!
Use MAGNET, please. Magnets aren't copyrighted.
8. Black Luster
Soldier (both of 'em)- ...Funny, they won't allow "Black" for the Dark Magician,
yet they let THIS go? Please. Why didn't they leave it at Chaos Soldier? There
are plenty of Chaos cards....
7. Buster Rancher-
You can read up on this at
6.Jinzo, Jirai Gumo,
Hyozanryu, etc.- Why did they leave those as Jap names? They could have called
Jinzo "Psychic Android" or something of the sort. The others are just asking,
"Why the heck are we even TRANSLATED if our Jap names are being used, anyways?"
5. "Des" cards- Fran
(from http://kokorononaka.net ) actually
told me the logic behind the "des"- it ties in with "desu," which is, I believe,
the Japanese "death." However, recently, a model kit for Masked Beast OF
Guardius" was released. Go figure; the majority of the fans were talking about
how "des" was a partitive article in French and German (meaning that it
represents, as one student in my Latin class put it, "of-ness.") It's nice to
know that they're listening, yet, at the same time, strange to have "of
Guardius" (must..resist...putting 2nd declension noun into genitive case!), and
it leaves you wondering what the heck a Guardius is, anyways.
4. Winged Dragon,
Guardian of the Fortress #1 and #2- So, now "Wyvern" is "Winged Dragon?" Wyvern
isn't copyrighted, or anything, so why change that? More importantly, why give
it the longest name on any Duel Monsters card in the whole game? O.o;
Is that to prevent people from using them?
3. Dark Witch (and
Dunames Dark Witch)- These used to be Valkyries. I can understand (well, SORT OF
understand) trying to cover up the mythology, but calling those two Witches
makes very little sense. I hope that, when KC Grand Prix comes around in the
anime, that the dubbers will have enough sense to call them "Valkyries..." Oh,
and they should also have the sense to leave the "Walkurenritt" music in.
2. Luster Dragon-
Now, I have heard that this "Luster" business was due to a copyright issue. That
doesn't mean that it was still the best thing to call these dragons. Something
like "Green Crystal Dragon" and "Blue Crystal Dragon" would have cleared up a
lot of confusion. Luster usually refers to metal, folks.
1. Mazzera DeVille-
What were they thinking when they named this?! The name makes it seem like
he's related to Cruella DeVil from "101 Dalmations!" In other words, VERY
bad cover up, there. Way to go.
