Subject: I am beatdown, hear me roar -
Darkness and Light
Before you begin, I would like to extract a promise
from you to read this entire message. Unless everything is taken in
context, you'll just walk away pissed off and no one is happy.
It doesn't
matter what card game you play. The majority of all the complainers are
the ones who whine that beatdown is boring and everyone else should be
original. Well I'm proud to admit it. I am beatdown incarnate.
I sit there and pound my opponent into paste. And you know what? I
am a better deck designer and player then you will ever be. Why?
Because I know how to make a deck that works.
I know that all of you are
pissed off at my stupidity and arrogance. Well lets get a few things
straight.
1. Why am I a better designer? - I think it's rather
obvious. If you handicap your deck because you are afraid of what other
people will say about it, you aren't a very good designer. On a more
technical note, I recognize the inherient weakness in beatdown decks. They
work because of their simplicity. They consistently must bring out large
monsters to overrun the opponents defenses. The deck is improved by making
the monsters stronger, by making the more consistent. The side effect of
this improvment is a loss of versitility which some players wrongly term
"strategy". To compensate, a beatdown deck is made faster and faster to
end the match before these meta-gaming cards can be brought into play.
Unfortunately this also has its side effects. Speeding up a deck usually
creates a card disadvantage in order to overcome one of the other limiters on
the game. Thus, beatdown decks require a balance of power, speed and
endurance. I consider beatdown decks the best way for a player to hone
their tuning skills. How many of you put this kind of thought into your
off-the-internet Exodia/Shields and Swords/discard decks? All deck types
require some degree of design skill, beatdown decks just aren't as
obvious.
2. Why am I a better player? - This is not so obvious. On
the surface, beatdown decks seldom are designed with the big 4 card combos found
in other decks and seem easier to play. However, most combo decks merely
stall untill all of the proper cards are drawn to blow away the opponent.
A beatdown player must play very carefully because they have very limited
responses to situations. Do I trap hole this monster then attack you with
both my monsters or do I save it and just attack it then attack you with my
second monster? A beat down player has to try to be better because there
are just too many resources to respond with and inexperienced players tend to
burn out their decks. I might play a La Jinn as my one monster a turn
instead of sacrificing a monster to bring out Summoned Skull because a Black
Skull Dragon they don't see coming could be all I need to win.
Maybe I'm
not a better designer or player then some of you, but I can give it a good
shot. Beatdown does not automatically mean inferior player because some of
us work hard to get where we are. If you still think we all suck then you
better step up and write something or you've been shut down. Oh and try to
sound half way intelligent when you rant, we would all appreciate it.
