Deck Construction for beginners
Many people (especially beginners) believe that "Attack" means everything in a battle. Although a high attack attribute can take you a little ways in a battle you can't win on attack only, but the easiest way to construct a successful deck is to follow DETM. Or in other words, Defense, Effects, traps, and magic. Defense is the biggest key. I would recommend Labyrinth Wall (3000 defense) as a best bet on holding your opponent back for a couple of turns. Then you also need 3-5 more cards that can hold out for more than 1 or 2 turns. That then allows you to set up cards such as Crab turtle that need specialty cards to work. The second most important thing is cards that have good solid effects. Some cards that fit those criteria are Invitation to a Dark Sleep, Lava Battleguard, Swamp battleguard, and Minar. After these affects are in play you can take shots at the opponent's life points (depending on the effects). Then after you have solid effect and defensive cards you will need trap and magic cards. Some people seem to think that you can win with all monsters, wrong. It is next to impossible to win if you have no descent trap or magic cards. So to start out you need cards that can stop opponent's strong monsters in their tracks. Snake Fang, Prohibition, Trap Hole, Type Zero Magic Crusher, Remove trap, and Two Pronged attack are the cards that will help you the most as a beginner. So after you have focused on those areas and are confident in all of them you should move on to some strong common cards. Mr. Volcano, queen bird, swordstalker, slot machine, wingweaver, and Ryu-Ran are some cards that can anchor your deck and take chunks out of your opponent's life points. Now that you know what cards are somewhat essential you can put the rest of your deck together with your own personal preference. So just remember, Defense, effects, trap, and magic cards are the building blocks of a successful deck.
