Tips for building a Chaos deck, by the New Era Outlaw!

Howdy, folks.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

After a long hiatus, I have returned, with yet another article to help you guys in your quest to become the ultimate duelists! (Good LORD, that was corny).

Before I begin, though, thanks go out to all of those who read my previous articles, 'Tips for building a Toon deck' and 'Tips for building a Necrovalley deck', and offered up their comments and suggestions. I appreciate it, guys.

Now, as some of you may know, the release of 'Invasion of Chaos' saw a lot of ground-breaking cards. Beatdown decks got a HUGE boost from cards like Berserk Gorilla and Mad Dog of Darkness, and Exodia decks got another combo to try out, with Manticore of Darkness, which also holds its own in formidable Beast decks.

But what truly defined that set and broke the standard for duel decks everywhere was the advent of the Emissaries of Chaos. Of course, I'm talking about the big, bad monsters known as Chaos Emperor Dragon: Envoy of the End, and Black Luster Soldier: Envoy of the Beginning.

Decks using these cards became the most powerful and broken decks in the game....if you weren't getting your monsters removed, one by one, until you're wide open for a Yata attack by Black Luster, you were getting burned by the ever-so cheesy effect of CED.

But as powerful as these cards are, they require a special deck to help them along.

The main thing to remember here is that they require a LIGHT and a DARK monster to be removed from your Graveyard, so that they can be Special Summoned from your HAND.

But with the multitude of DARK and LIGHT monsters out there, how do you know which ones are the most suitable for a Chaos deck? This is what this article is all about.

First, let's start with the best LIGHT monsters that you can add in your Chaos Deck.

Hysteric Fairy - Probably the best LIGHT monster that you can add in a Chaos Deck. Why?

Because of her oh-so overlooked effect, that's why. Hysteric Fairy is a very efficent way to Tribute a LIGHT and a DARK and get them to the Graveyard. Not only will you get your Chaos monster requirements, but you will also gain a nifty 1000 LP, perfect for when you're ready to let it rip with Chaos Emperor Dragon.....it will almost seem like you're paying NOTHING to use his effect. I often use Hysteric Fairy's effect when Witch of the Black Forest is my DARK monster on the field. So, this combo is also perfect for sussing out Yata as well, since summoning the Chaos monster is a Special Summon, and you have one more summon for the turn (providing you haven't summoned as yet). Also, here's another tidbit about Hysteric Fairy you should know....can you say 'Chain Priority'? Simply put, Hysteric Fairy retains the right to use her effect first in a chain, so even if your opponent tries to Trap Hole or play Ring of Destruction on her, you can use the effect first in the chain, causing the other effects to disappear, since she's no longer on the field. Mind you, Chain Priority works ONLY if you have JUST SUMMONED HYSTERIC FAIRY. Hysteric Fairy's effect is also Speed Spell 1, just to let you know that you can't use her effect during an opponent's turn. Also, you CAN tribute Hysteric Fairy using her own effect.

Whew....a lot to say about one of my favorite Duel monsters, but I have to make sure that I've covered everything about Hysteric Fairy. Got it? Good.

Reflect Bounder - The 'human Magic Cylinder'. Honestly, what's NOT to like about this card?

A solid 1700 ATK, and the ability to cause some serious hurt if your opponent goes all commando on it. Plus, it's another LIGHT. Some things you should know about this card, though....

1. Reflect Bounder's effect takes place BEFORE Damage calculation. Which means, by all rights, he causes damage before his controller takes damage.

2. You CAN chain Barrel Behind the Door to the effect of Reflect Bounder.

3. If Injection Fairy Lily attacks this card and uses her effect, you only deflect 400 damage.

This is because the Damage Step takes place WAY after Damage Calculation. Afterwards, you take 1300 damage from the 3000 ATK boost (3000 - 1700), and Reflect Bounder is destroyed.

4. If a monster with lower ATK attacks Reflect Bounder, the total damage done to your opponent will be 1700. That would be the damage caused by Reflect Bounder's effect + deflected damage caused as a result of the ATK being weaker than Reflect Bounder's. Reflect Bounder's effect takes place first, and BOTH monsters are destroyed.

Thunder Nyan Nyan - I have seen some people use this card in a Chaos deck, and it's probably for a good reason....the effect flings her to the Graveyard if any other type hits the field. Also, it's a solid 1900 ATK, which can mean trouble for your opponent if more than one is one the field.

Magician of Faith - Magic Retrieval is very good. If it means getting that Harpie's Feather Duster or Heavy Storm so your Chaos monster can make a safe landing, then, by ALL means, run one.

Also, it's weak, so you won't have any qualms about removing it from play when you summon your Emissary of Chaos.

Now, on to the DARK monsters:

Archfiend Soldier - 1900 ATK, the ability to be searched out by a Witch of the Black Forest, and NO drawbacks because it's a Normal monster. Any questions? VERY solid addition to a Chaos Deck.

Mad Dog of Darkness - See above.

Kycoo the Ghost Destroyer - Not only is he handy in a Chaos deck, but he's also handy AGAINST a rival Chaos deck as well. His effect prevents removal of cards from either player's Graveyard from play by your opponent, so summoning a Chaos monster is a no-no. But that doesn't stop you from removing his Chaos food from play, now does it? Mweheehee.....

Cyber Jar- If you don't know why this is here, you need a swift kick to your head. Sussing out the Soldier is a LOT easier if you have a card like this. If not, you can still get out some LIGHT/DARK monsters on the field for later summoning.....

Mask of Darkness - Same as Magician of Faith, only the reason for running him is you NEED back-up if something were to happen to your Chaos monster on the next turn. Imperial Order and Solemn Judgement are prime picks here.

Jinzo - Really now... didn't you see this coming? Traps negated=easy pickings with Black luster Soldier and Chaos Emperor Dragon. Nuff said.

Now, let's look at some ideal support cards for a Chaos deck:

Yata-Garasu - A GREAT card to combo with either Chaos monster. It makes a better tag-team partner with Black Luster Soldier, though, since he's what I call a more permanent solution to your problem, by removing monsters, one by one, from play, thus thinning out your opponent's options even MORE. Run this card, no matter WHAT.

Delinquent Duo, Confiscation, The Forceful Sentry- These cards are preventative measures, to ensure that your opponent has nothing up his sleeve when you finally summon that Chaos monster. Plus, you can thin out your opponent's options even MORE, with regards to the previous combo.

Card Destruction, Morphing Jar- Disrupting an opponent's hand is good. Increasing your chances of drawing a Chaos monster while dumping LIGHT/ DARK in your Graveyard is even BETTER.

Graceful Charity- I draw three cards. Dump Hysteric Fairy and Mask of Darkness from my hand, remove them from play, to summon my Chaos monster. Any questions?

Painful Choice- I have seen this card work EXCRUTIATINGLY well with Chaos decks. Once you have your Chaos monster in your hand, just play this card, dump LIGHT and DARK like there's no tomorrow, and watch your opponent turn beet red, because he actually did you a favour.

SUCKER!!!

Tribe-infecting Virus- You just NEVER know when your Chaos monster will be turned on you. Should an unfortunate thing like Snatch Steal or Monster Reborn happen to you, you will LOVE this card when it rears its ugly head. On top of that, it has Chain Priority, so unless your opponent plays Solemn Judgement or Horn of Heaven, that Chaos monster is going bye-bye.

Solemn Judgement- Wouldn't it be nice to have your opponent play that one, final card that would be able to save him in the nick of time, only to have victory torn from him because of this card?

And there you have it.

These cards can truly help you out in your quest in build the powerful Chaos deck.

And now, for your perusal, here is my current deck, which happens to be a custom Chaos deck that I can truly call my own.
