Article #1: The Dark
Magician
I decided to start my articles by reviewing my
favorite card. The Dark Magician. Now, please keep in mind that this is only my
opinion, and I'm sure some people will hate the cards I write about. But in all
fairness, don't diss a card until you've tried it yourself. Myself, I could
never pull off a successful Yata-lock if my life (or lifepoints) depended on it,
so to me, Yata-Gurasu never really became a staple to me. Oh, and one more
thing. As of now, I'll only write about MONSTER cards, and I only write
(usually) about UNDER PLAYED cards. So for one more time UNDER PLAYED
MONSTERS! Now that that's settled, on to the premier card! The Dark
Magician!
-
Veteran
players would remember the Dark Magician. In LOB, he was an Ultra Rare. In SDY,
he was an Ultra Rare. Back then, people threw poor Dark Magician into their
binders and traded him away to newbie's that drooled all over him (literally).
Since then, Dark Magician has been planning his revenge for being cast aside for
better cards, like Summoned Skull, Vampire Lord, and the ever evil Jinzo! But
yes! Dark Magician has been planning his revenge for when the better players
will try and compete for him because of his true power!
Sadly, that
day will never come. Lets face it fellow DM fans. Dark Magician is two tributes
with no effect. And, with only 2500 attack power, Summoned Skull uses Dark
Magician as a door mat. Until a set called Magician's Force came along.
Magician's Force cam and revived Dark Magician. It gave us Americans
a way of searching for him with a little determination. I'm I'm taking
about Skilled Dark Magician. Playing three helpful magic cards, and I get to
summon my Dark Magician? Thanks!. Dark Magician Girl came out too, but when my
first magician deck came out, I shunned her away. She just wasn't playable.
Time went on, my first of many magician decks failed, and I had a
burner deck. That failed. Warriors. Failed. Then IOC came out. Like anyone else,
I turned to Chaos and got myself a BLS - EotB, CED - EotE, and a Dark Magician
of Chaos. Silently, a card that transformed Dark Magician into a big monster
came out. This card is called Dedication through Light and Darkness.
Transforming Dark Magician into a Dark Magician of Chaos is more fun then
killing off someone with a Skull Servant (very fun).
Before AST came
out, gamers got new games. To even the trade, Dark Magician got new cards. The
One Day Game (Power of Chaos - Yugi the Destiny) had Dark Magician's Throwing
Knives, or Thousand Knives. Destroying a monster on the field can be helpful
now, more then it's initial release. Dark Magician's favorite Gameboy game was
released (even if it was beatable in 24 hours). It's programming, in question,
three, count'm THREE Dark Magician cards were released with Resheef of
Destruction. Sage's Stone is unarguably the best of them. It even makes Dark
Magician Girl playable! The Knight is cool, but after playing it, I think Dark
Magician Knight needs it's own deck. Finally, the movie of the anime centaury
likes our buddy too. The Sorcerers of Dark Magic is an amazing card. It
certainly doesn't need the Dark Magician, but the Dark Magician loves him. To
negate the activation of any trap hurts 7 to 10 cards in most decks, and even
more in other decks. He's not perfect, as he can't negate traps existing on the
field.
NOTE: AST also gave Dark Magician the cool Dark Magic Attack,
and Dawn of Destiny gave the semi-useless Dark Sage.
So that's Dark
Magician's history. Cards that will help that aren't out yet are: Dark Magic
Curtain, Dimension Magic, and Dark Magic Tome. And, because I'm bored, I'll give
an example of a some cards that are useful in a Dark
Magician.
Skilled Dark Magician (MFC - Super)
Dark Magician
Girl (MFC - Secret Rare)
Dark Magician of Chaos (IOC - Ultra
Rare)
Sorcerers of Dark Magic (The Yu-gi-oh! Movie Promo)
Sage's
Stone (Resheef of Destruction)
Thousand Knives (Yugioh! POC -
Yugi)
Dark Magic Attack (AST - Ultra Rare)
Dedication through
Light and Darkness (IOC - Super)
These are only a few cards. There
are more, but they turn the deck into a specialized Dark Magician
Decks.
Next Time - The Envoy himself!
