Greetings, Pojo.com readers.
I am TobiasX, known over the previous year in Edgeware, London, (Best
Tournaments EVER!) as 'King Of Trade'. Now that my position has been filled
over the holidays by my buddy Antonio, I'll be trading less and duelling
more. For those of you who have some idea who I am here's a clue: I'm the
guy with the long dark hair and the ridiculously huge Bag Of Trade. The
other reason I hardly enter is that my deck was stolen at Uni and I've been
playing Jap cards (No matter what anyone says, the cards are better
quality). Anyway, I'm going to mainly write about the Banned List, and why
I think the cards deserve to be banned. Any references I make to japanese
cards will be by their japanese names and have a (J) symbol next to them.
They can be looked up at Edo's Yugioh Site
(http://www.stormpages.com/edhrzic/Yugioh.htm, GOD of Translations!).
For those who are already annoyed, my deck lists are near the end of the
article.
Anyway, on to the Banned List
1. Banned List
Name: Yata Garasuu
Attribute: Wind
Sub-Type: Fiend / Spirit / Effect
ATK: 200
DEF: 100
Effect: When this monster inflicts damage to your opponent's Life Points,
your opponent skips their next Battle Phase.
Yata Garasu: The Stupid Bird. THAT Stupid Bird. Possibly the most
irritating monster in the game. They made it a spirit to try and make it
less effective, and that HELPED it!
There are 2 ways to win with this monster. The first is the Chaos Lock.
Get Sangan or Witch of the Black Forest onto the field, Special Summon Chaos
Emperor Dragon (praying your opponent doesn't have Solemn Judgement) and
instantly choose to activate his effect. For those who are unsure, you
cannot CHAIN his effect, or activate it in your opponent's turn. It's just
in your Main Phase 1 or 2. Anyway, using Sangan/WotBF's effect, you choose
to add Yata Garasu to your hand from your deck. You summon it and attack.
You're opponent has no hand, no monsters, no magic, no trap, and no Draw
Phase next turn. Unless you make a mistake, there is NOTHING your opponent
can do!
The 2nd way seems to be commented less upon by people but used before
Invasion of Chaos by almost every Advanced Tournament Duelist at the
Edgeware Tournament. The combo is simple, get Dark Ruler Ha Des (to deal
with face-down Monsters) Jinzo (to deal with their back row) and Yata Garasu
to finish the job. This is a variation on Beatdown called a Lockdown Deck,
and is, simply put, a Powerful Beatdown Deck with Yata Garasu thrown in.
Anyway, Yata. I hate it. Many people hate being beaten by the Stupid Bird,
but I hate using it as well. It's too easy, it makes duels boring. When
it's Chaos vs Chaos, or Lockdown vs Chaos, it's more of a competition to see
who can draw Yata first. When I was starting out at tournaments about a
year ago I got locked by Yata and a Spirit Reaper! Damn damn damn you
Stupid Bird.
Name: Chaos Emperor Dragon
Attribute: Dark
Sub-Type: Dragon / Effect
ATK: 3000
DEF: 2500
Effect: This monster cannotbe Normal Summoned. This monster can be Special
Summoned by removing 1 LIGHT and 1 DARK monster in your graveyard from play.
You can pay 1000 Life Points to put all cards on the field and in both
player's hands into their respective graveyards. Inflict Direct Damage to
your opponent's Life Points equal to the number of cards sent to the
graveyard by this effect times 300.
Okay, there are reasons people hate this card, and why it got banned. Lets
think about the ideal situation; you have 5 monsters (1 of which is Chaos
Emperor Dragon), 5 Magic/Traps, and 6 cards in your hand. That's a total of
16 cards, and 4800 Direct Damage to your opponent's Life Points at the cost
of 1000 of your own. Oh yeah, and if 1 of you monsters is a Jinzo and
another is Dark Ruler Ha Des, then you attack first THEN activate the effect
in Main Phase 2. Do you really care how many cards your opponent is holding?
Chances are that if you time it right you could easily end the game in 1
turn, and that can get boring sometimes. I myself run Chaos Emperor Dragon
and Chaos Soldier (Black Luster Soldier - Envoy of the Beginning) because I
like the cards. Strangely, I hate using Chaos Emperor Dragon's effect, and
try to avoid it if I can.
Anyway, next card.
Name: Sangan
Attribute: Dark
Sub-Type: Fiend / Effect
ATK: 1000
DEF: 600
Effect: When this monster is destroyed and sent to the graveyard you may add
1 Monster with 1500 ATK or less from your deck to your hand.
Okay, I don't really like this card being banned, but I can see the point,
and that is Deck Destruction. When I ran it in Jap for a while, it was my
main searching tool, plus I could tribute it for my Deck Destruction Virus
(J, Kaiba Structure Deck). In a Deck Destruction Deck, this guy can go and
look for Cyber Jar, Morphing Jar, Morphing Jar #2, Needle Worm and Spear
Cretin. In most other decks you can instantly get Don Zaloog and D.D.
Warrior Lady. These are cards that you would normally have to work a bit
more for, using cards like Mystic Tomato and Shining Angel, at least. He
was banned to slow down Deck Destruction and try to make the field a little
fairer, nothing more.
Name: Witch of the Black Forest
Attribute: Dark
Sub-Type: Spellcaster / Effect
ATK: 1100
DEF: 1200
Effect: When this monster is destroyed and sent to the graveyard you may add
1 Monster with 1500 DEF or less from your deck to your hand.
Part of me will be sad to see this card go, but most of me will be happy.
Why? Because if my opponent is half good and/or has another monster on
their field, they're going to get Jinzo. Why? Because he is the most
played Tribute Monster in the game with the most Dominating Effect. You can
also search out any 1900+ ATK level 4 monster with the exception of Skilled
Dark Magician. Also, as well as Sangan, this cards effect WILL work when
its destroyed except when stopped by End of Anubis, Dark Ruler Ha Des,
Ultimate Obedient Fiend (who actually runs this?), Dark Balter or similar
monsters. 99 times out of 100 this effect WILL work, and your opponent WILL
get a monster of their choice from their deck. The other nasty thing about
the Witch, every card I mentioned that Sangan can get can ALSO be grabbed by
the Witch, which makes her even more likely to not return from the Banned
List.
Name: Delinquent Duo
Type: Normal Magic
Effect: Pay 1000 Life Points and discard 1 card from your opponent's hand at
random. Your opponent then chooses 1 card from their hand and discards it.
This card is more annoying than truly dangerous, but more against Zombie
Decks as they have Despair From The Dark. However, for most people, this
can really mess up your plans. The main reason I think this got banned is
the cost of only 1000 Life Points. It's a lot, but nothing to seriously
worried about. I'm glad to see it go though, as I usually hate running
cards like it, even when necessary.
Name: Harpie's Feather Duster
Type: Normal Magic
Effect: Destroy all Magic and/or Trap Cards on your opponent's side of the
field.
This card can be difficult to aquire if you don't have internet access, in
which case you aren't reading this article anyway. The problem with this
card is twofold; first, no cost. No cost at all. Not even 'discard 1 card
from your hand'. That would have been better, at least it would have been
SOMETHING. Anyway, second problem, only your opponent. This means there is
absolutely no downside to using this card. The ony possible bad situation
with this is a face-down Judgement Of Anubis IF you have a face-up monster
on the field. I run this card in my Japanese Deck because it's necessary,
just like the next card. I hate it and will be glad to put it back in my
folder. Perminently.
Nane: Raigeki
Type: Normal Magic
Effect: Destroy all Monsters on your opponent's side of the field.
Pretty much the same rant as the previous card; No cost at all, plus it
doesn't care about face-up/face-down or position (ATK/DEF) like Mirror Force
and Dark Mirror Force do. It simply destroys, and that's broken. Never
expect to see this card come off the Banned List.
Name: Dark Hole
Type: Normal Magic
Effect: Destroy all Monsters on the field.
Personally, this is the 1st banned card I disagree with strongly. I know
that if you're Top-Decking (have no cards in your hand during your Draw
Phase) then this is just as broken as Raigeki, plus Exodia Decks use it to
blow up Sangan and Witch, but I still don't believe it should be banned.
1-Per-Deck yes, but not banned.
Name: Graceful Charity
Type: Normal Magic
Effect: Draw 3 cards from your deck. Afterwards, discard 2 cards from your
hand to the graveyard.
This card is the 2nd and of the 3 cards I disagree with on the Banned List.
The reason it was banned is simple: Chaos. The ideal hand in a Chaos Deck
when you use Graceful Charity is a Chaos Monster (either), 1 LIGHT monster
and 1 DARK monster. You don't care what they are, because you discard them
to the graveyard and then remove them from play to summon the Chaos Monster.
I've had fun with my deck recently with my Deck Virus because my opponent
drew 3 monsters, discarded them, then had to discard 2 cards for Graceful
Charity. Back to the card though, with the banning of CED (Chaos Emperor
Dragon) I don't think this should have been banned.
Name: Monster Reborn
Type: Normal Magic
Effect: Special Summon 1 Monster to your side of the field from either your
or your opponent's Graveyard.
This card is broken. Everyone uses it, even though we have Premature Burial
and Call of the Haunted, but its still broken. No cost to Summon 1 Monster
of either you or your opponents that has fulfilled any Special Summon
conditions stated on the card. The 2 best targets for this cards effect are
both in your opponent's graveyard: their CED or their Jinzo. The reason for
this is it takes it away from Call Of The Haunted and Premature Burial.
Chances are your just going to use CED's effect right away, which can get
annoying after a while. Also, when Top-Decking, you can stop your opponent
in their tracks. I don't usually like using my opponent's cards, even CED
and Jinzo, and only do so if it'll win me the match (and even then, I don't
like it much, why should I rely on my opponent's cards to win?). Anyway,
this card is broken. Perhaps a card that allows us to Special Summon from
our own graveyard will be made soon, we can only hope...
Name: United We Stand
Type: Equip Magic
Effect: Increase the ATK of the equipped monster by 800 points for every
face-up monster on the field.
The only Magic-Equip card anyone runs at the moment is going, and I am glad,
even if I'm the only one who is. This card is irritating not just because
of the possible 4000 ATK (yes, 4000!) bonus it gives with a full field (5
monsters) but because it doesn't specify any type of monster, and that's why
it was banned. Mage Power is only a possible 2500 ATK bonus, Axe of Dispair
is only 1000. Neither of these, like United We Stand, specify a type. I
personally think these cards should all be taken away and burned, or
possibly leave Axe of Dispair as a 1-Per-Deck card. Possibly the worst
thing about these 2 equip cards is my friend Antonio. He has been known to
equip both of these to a Kuribo to finish a player off. Just so you can see
what's going on I'll do the math for you.
Kuribo's Stats: 300/200
Add United We Stand (gains 800 ATK and DEF) : 1100/1000
Add Mage Power (gains 1000 because of United We Stand and Mage Power):
2100/2000
Okay, 2 cards, and you've got a 2100/2000 Level 2 monster?
Lets add 2 more Magic/Trap Cards, and 1 other monster: 3900/3800
Hold on, yes, that's right, a 3900/3800 Kuribo...
In my humble oppinion, that's just wrong.
Just to check (as I know my maths is terrible):
United We Stand: 1600 Bonus for 2 face-up monsters on the field.
Mage Power: 2000 Bonus for 4 Magic/Trap Cards on the field.
Kuribo's original stats of 300/200 become 300+1600+2000 / 200+1600+2000.
Yep: 3900/3800 Kuribo. Ouch.
Yes, I know that was mostly a rant about Mage Power. However, just think
about Jinzo. He can now take down a Blue Eyes White Dragon. And you thought
the Blue Eyes was big before? Add a Lord of D next to it and it becomes a
4200 monster (300 ATK less than the Blue Eyes Ultimate Dragon). United We
Stand is broken because it doesn't have a specific monster, or even a
specific sub-type that it works with. The only place I could condone its
use is in a Special Summon Deck or a Warrior Deck (partly because Warriors
come out fast, partly because of the art-work, mostly because Antonio HATES
Warriors, lol!).
Oh yeah, and 2 monsters turns Kuribo into a 2700 ATK Level 2, does that
sound right to you?
Name: Imperial Order
Type: Continuous Trap
Effect: Pay 700 Life Points during your Standby Phase or destroy this card.
While this card is face-up, negate the activation and effects of Magic Cards
and destroy them.
This card is the reason not many people run Magic Jammer or Magic Drain.
It's a free, continuous Magic Jammer. You can't even Mystical Space Typhoon
the thing unless you do it in a chain! Okay, so, why this was Banned.
People would activate it during their opponent's Draw Phase, thus negating
all their Magic Cards for a whole turn. Next, they choose not to pay the
Life Point Cost, letting them use their Magic Cards again. Even worse, if
they have no Magic Cards in their hand, they WILL pay the cost, stopping
their opponent again for another turn. Even though the most powerful Magic
Cards (Raigeki, Harpie's Feather Duster, Monster Reborn) are now Banned as
well, it's still one of the most powerful Trap Cards in the game. Good bye
and good ridence.
Name: Mirror Force
Type: Normal Trap
Effect: You mat activate this card when your opponent declares an attack.
Negate the attack and destroy all monsters on your opponent's side of the
field in Face-Up Attack Position.
This is the last card on the list that I don't think should have been
banned. Firstly, the reason it is banned, Monster Destruction. This
September/October's Banned List seems to be based on eliminating large
amounts of Monster Destruction, and this is the final culprit after Raigeki
and Dark Hole. The reasons I don't think it should be banned are these: it
has a trigger and is specific; it's trigger is that it can only be activated
when you're opponent declares an attack, just like Blast Held By A Tribute
(Dark Crisis) and the specific part is that it only targets face-up Attack
Position monsters. This should have been enough to keep it from getting
banned, but not make them go overboard and make it 2-Per-Deck.
2. The Cards I think Should Have Stayed Banned
Name: Fiber Jar
Attribute: Not Important
ATK/DEF: Not Important
Effect: FLIP: Each player combines their Hand, Deck and Graveyard, shuffles,
and draws 5 cards.
I once forfeited an Advanced Tournament Duel because my opponent used Fiber
Jar 4 times during 1 round, I got bored and wanted to go trade. This card
is not so much devistating but more Iritating. Chaos Decks hate it, but
most other decks like it, Especially Burn decks. This card can stop Destiny
Board, Exodia, but also help them and allow for a Scientist/Turtle or
Jowgen/Last-Turn 1-Turn-Kill combo to reset. All in all a card that should
have either been left Banned or made a Pharaonic Guardian Style Flip-Summon
effect.
Name: Change Of Heart
Type: Normal Magic
Effect: Choose 1 monster on your opponent's side of the field and gain
control of it until the End Phase of this turn.
I outright refuse to play this card, even in my tournament decks. I know
it's great, I ran if for a few months, then began to loath it. First of
all, it can take control of almost ANY monster with a few exception like
Blindly Loyal Goblin. Second, it can take control of a face-up or
face-down, attack or defence position, monster. You grab your opponent's
face-down Cyber Jar and get rid of it to stop your opponent using it's
effect. Here's a short list of things Change of Heart can be used for.
- Get control of your opponent's Jinzo and attack another of their monsters.
- Get control of your opponent's Dark Ruler Ha Des and attack another of
their monsters.
- Get control of your opponent's Chaos Soldier (Black Luster Soldier) and
attack 2 of their monsters.
- Get control of your opponent's Chaos Emperor Dragon and activate his
effect (the original controller taking the damage).
- Get control of your opponent's face-down Fiber Jar after they kill your
last monster and Flip it.
- Get control of your opponent's monster (doesn't matter what) and tribute
it to summon your Jinzo.
- Get control of your opponent's monster (doesn't matter what) and tribute
it for Catapult Turtle's effect.
- Get control of your opponent's Kuribo (/w United We Stand + Mage Power)
and attack them with it (:P)
The annoying thing is, now that Change of Heart is unbanned, it's possibly
to have 1 Change of Heart, 1 Snatch Steal, 2 Creature Swap, and 3 Enemy
Controllers in your deck. I've already said that I hate usingmy opponent's
cards, so I'd never play this combo, but I still hate them.
3. My Deck Lists
I promised I would, so I've included my 2 current decks. My Japanese Deck
is going to be rebuilt very soon in light of the bans, but currently is
still using Banned Cards. My American/English Deck is also using a few
Banned Cards, but only until I can get replacements.

4. The 3 Egyptian God Cards
I am currently trying to sort some kind of proper rulings for the 3 Egyptian
God Cards. Yes, I know they are NOT tournament legal. Yes, I know they are
a waste of cash, especially if Ra is the only reason you bought the X-Box
game 'Dawn of Destiny'. However, my friends and I all enjoy adding the 3
most powerful monsters ever created (with the possible exception of the 3
Legendary Dragons) into our duels and it makes it more fun.
General Rulings for the 3 Egyptian God Cards
For simplification, Card Effects are sorted by Designating a Target or not
and Destroying a Card or not.
Do Designate, Do Destroy: These cards include Exiled Force, Fissure and
Sakuretsu Armour. These cards do not affect an Egyptian God Card. The same
ruling applies to Tribe-Infecting Virus if Obelisk is the only Warrior,
Slifer is the only Dragon, or Ra is the only Machine. Also, the 3 Egyptian
God Cards also use the Tyrant Dragon Loophole that if they are the only
monster on the field effects such as Raigeki, Dark Hole and Mirror Force are
considered to be designating them as a target.
Do Designate, Don’t Destroy: These cards include Dark Jelliod, D.D. Warrior
Lady, Premature Burial, United We Stand, Call of the Haunted, Spell-Binding
Circle and Magic Cylinder. Any effect where the designating card remains on
the field and continues to designate the Egyptian God Card as a target
(United We Stand, Spell-Binding Circle) is destroyed during the End Phase of
the turn they are activated, providing the Egyptian God Card is still
face-up on the field. Any effect where the card no longer designates the
Egyptian God Card on the field as a target (D.D. Warrior Lady, Dark Jelliod)
is considered to be unaffected by the Egyptian God Card’s effect.
Don’t Designate, Do Destroy: These cards include Tribe-Infecting Virus
(with more than 1 Machine / Dragon / Warrior), Raigeki (with more than 1
monster) and Mirror Force (with more than 1 monster). If the card were
activated in reaction to the action of an Egyptian God Card (e.g. Mirror
Force when Obelisk the Tormentor attacks and there are not other monsters in
ATK position on the same side of the field) the effect would be negated
completely. If, however, the card were activated in reaction to something
else (e.g. Mirror Force when a different monster attacks, but Obelisk the
Tormentor is on the same side of the field in face-up ATK position) then the
Egyptian God Card would be destroyed. For questions about Cyber Jar, if
there is more than 1 monster on the field after Cyber Jar is destroyed by
Battle, it’s effect WILL DESTROY an Egyptian God Card (similar to Dark
Hole).
Don’t Designate, Don’t Destroy: These cards are typically continuous
effects, such as Lord of D, Swords of Revealing Light and Gravity Bind.
These effects continue to work on Egyptian God Card until the first End
Phase in which the God Card is face-up and the card has been active on the
field. After this, the effect no longer applies to the Egyptian God Card.
If, somehow, the Egyptian God Card is turn face-down and Flip-Summoned, the
effects once again work until the next End Phase.
Magic Cards: Any Magic Card effect, whether it designates (or designated) a
target, is negated during the End Phase of the turn it was activated. For
this reason, Monster Reborn, and similar cards, only work until the End
Phase of the turn they are activated, and the Egyptian God Card returns to
the graveyard at this time. For the same reasons, Dimension Distortion
would work for a single turn, and during the End Phase the Egyptian God Card
would once again be removed from play.
Control of an Egyptian God Card CANNOT change while it’s face-up. Effects
such as Change of Heart, Snatch Steal and Creature Swap cannot be applied to
an Egyptian God Card.
Summoning: The Egyptian God Cards must be Tribute-Summoned by offering 3
monsters on your side of the field as a tribute. This is considered a
Normal Summon.
Special Summoning: When an Egyptian God Card is Special Summoned from a
player’s hand or deck, it is treated the same as any other monster.
However, Egyptian God Cards can only be Special Summoned from the Graveyard
or Out Of Play for 1 turn.
Effects: The above effects only apply to Egyptian God Cards while they are
FACE-UP on the field. They are not applied if the Egyptian God Card is
face-down.
Final Note: Returning an Egyptian God Card to the owner’s Hand or Deck or
Removing it from Play are not considered Destruction Effects. Only effects
which specifically include the word ‘Destroy’ in their text or that send the
Egyptian God Card from the field to the Graveyard are considered Destruction
Effects.
Specific Effects
Name: Slifer the Sky Dragon
Attribute: Divine
ATK: X000
DEF: X000
Sub-Type: Divine-Beast / Dragon / Effect
Effect: The ATK and DEF of this monster are equal to the number of cards in
your hand times 1000. When a monster is Summoned (including Normal, Flip
and Special Summon) or Flipped Face-Up in/to face-up Attack Position, reduce
it's ATK by 2000. If this reduces the monster's ATK to 0 or less, destroy
the monster. When a monster is Summoned (including Normal, Flip and Special
Summon) or Flipped Face-Up in/to face-up Defence Position, reduce its DEF by
2000. If this reduces the monster's DEF to 0 or less, destroy the monster.
This effect is not applied to monsters that are already face-up on the field
when this monster is summoned.
Really Belongs in a: Elma Dagger Deck (think Gearfried, Elma, Royal Magic
Library and Magical Marionette...)
Name: Obelisk the Tormentor
Attribute: Divine
ATK: 4000
DEF: 4000
Sub-Type: Divine-Beast / Warrior / Effect
Effect: During your Battle Phase you may offer 2 monsters on your side of
the field as a tribute to destroy all monsters on your opponent's side of
the field. Obelisk must then attack or not attack again during this Battle
Phase.
Rellay Belongs in a: Skill Drain Deck
NOTE: My Ruling on Skill Drain on Egyptian God Cards is that it DOES negate
the 'General Rulings on Egyptian God Cards' as well as their own Specific
Effects.
Name: Winged Dragon of Ra
Attribute: Divine
ATK: ????
DEF: ????
Sub-Type: Divine-Beast / Machine (sometimes Dragon) / Effect
Effect: The ATK of this monster is equal to the combined ATK of the monsters
tributed to summmon it, and the DEF of this monster is equal to the combined
DEF of the monsters tributed to summon it. If Ra is summoned without
monsters being offered as a tribute, it's ATK and DEF are considered 0. If
Ra is Special Summoned from the Graveyard, this monster can attack during
the turn it is summoned. This effect cannot be negated by any continuous
effect. During your Main Phase 1 and/or 2, you may activate any of the
following effects as often as you like
- Pay 1000 Life Points and destroy 1 Monster on the field (face-up/down,
ATK/DEF postion),
- Pay any amount of your Life Points to increase the ATK and DEF of this
card by that amount,
- Offer 1 monster on your side of the field as a tribute to increase the ATK
of this monster by the tributed monster's ATK and the DEF of this monster by
the tributed monster's DEF.
ADVANCED SUMMONING RULING: This only applies to the more avid TV fan
players, or players who want to make the game more about memory. When RA is
successfully tribute-summoned, it is placed face-down between both player's
Monster Zones. The player who successfully tribute-summoned Ra is then
given the first oppertunity to recite the following chant in its entirety:
"Great beast of the sky, please hear my cry;
Transform thy self, from orb of light, and bring me victory in this fight;
Envelop the desert with your glow, and cast your rage upon my foe;
Unlock your powers, from deep within, so that together, we may win;
Appear in the Shadow Game, as I call your name:
Winged Dragon of Ra!"
If a player is unable to recite the chant completely then the next player is
given a chance during their Standby Phase. This continues until 1 player
recites the chant completely. The first player to do this MUST Special
Summon Ra to their side of the field in either face-up ATK or DEF position.
