Hey all - I'm
back from a long break from writing tournament reports. I never did get to
run my camcorder today, so the notes aren't 100% accurate, as always. But
given the circumstances of this tournament, it was important enough to write
on. Let's just say I knew what the prize was going to be a couple days in
advance…we'll get to that later.
7:30 AM: Get up and wish Dad Happy
Father's Day, and pray that I can still go to the tourney.
9:00 AM:
Shave, etc.
10:00 AM: Take dad out to brunch.
11:00 AM: Go to
the flea market. I find out my friend is going to the tourney...I've got
to get there!
12:00 PM: I'm allowed to go. We get home at 12:30,
and my dad opens his gifts. His gift to me is overriding my mom's
authority in saying that I couldn't go to the tourney…
We barely get
enough people at 1:30 - 2 walk in at the end, and Cory (my friend and second
rival) decides to run Beatdown instead of Exodia. The pairings are set
after many die rolls (re-rolls for players with same number)…and Jesse's my
opponent in round 1. In many practice duels over the last week, I hadn't
been faring well. This was either a blessing or a curse, the Round 1
pairing. If I lose, begging my dad to let me go would mean nothing, and
Cory and Jesse would catch up majorly. If I win, Jesse would officially
have NO chance at the Millennium Puzzle Trophy.
Round 1: Any Given
Sunday vs. Jesse's Hyper Beatdown
Duel 1 can be summarized with one
sentence: Let the Torrential Tributes fly. I kept getting the field
clear for direct assaults with them, and Jesse used staple magics for the one
blow he did get off - a Gemini Elf. Injection Fairy Lily did its job
shortening the match, and Spear Dragon finished him off.
LP: 8000-6100
(Gemini) - 4100 (IFL payment) to his 8000 - 5800 (Marauding Captain + Exiled
Force) - 2400 (Injection Fairy Lily) - 500 (Spear Dragon) - 0
Duel
2: This one was much closer. He hits me with Spear Dragon directly
right out of the gate. My next blow nearly evens it up, Injection Fairy
Lily direct. I start the smackdown with my own Spear Dragon and Marauding
Captain, upkeep Imperial order to be safe, and end up with the win.
LP:
8000-6100 (Spear) - 4100 (Injection payment) - 3400 (IO) - 2700 (IO) to his 8000
- 4600 (IFL) - 3600 (Exiled Force) - 1700 (Spear Dragon) - 500 (Marauding
Captain) - 0
I eliminated Jesse in Round 1. AGAIN. He's so
far back, he'll never catch up. Mission 1 accomplished. The hard
part is out of the way until the end - Cory is in the other side of the
bracket. With any luck, we'd meet in the finals.
I went up against
Nick in the next round. It was one of those rounds where you only lost LP
when you were the one paying for it.
Round 2: Any Given Sunday vs.
Nick
Duel 1: No LP loss here. Hit for 2200 (Marauding +
Exiled), then 1600 (Magic Cylinder his bazoo), then 3700 (I forget how), then
the final blow. I Noblemaned his Man-Eater Bug…
8000 to his
8000-5800-4200-500-0
Duel 2: Lost 1800 here, from my own
effects. Delinquent Duo + Premature Burial to be exact. Not much
worth noting, except who did what damage.
8000-7000 (Delinquent) - 6200
(Premature) to his 8000-7000 (Exiled Force) - 3700 (GAF + Exiled Force) - 2500
(Marauding Captain) - 3000 (Did 3500 damage, but he activated Nutrient Z) - 600
(Jinzo) - 0
I was up against Zack in the next round. Again, I have
this reputation for players hating to find out they're up against me
next. He knew I really wanted the prize that was being
offered…
Round 3: Any Given Sunday vs. Zach (Random deck)
The
only LP I lost in this duel was via my own effects again, but it was more than
1800.
Duel 1: Slammed him repeatedly with Injection Fairy.
Directly (after one Marauding Captain hit)
8000-7200 (Premature) - 5200
(IFL pay) - 3200 (IFL Pay) to his 8000-6800 (MCaptain) - 2600 (IFL) - 0
(IFL)
Duel 2: Gemini and Jinzo took this one within 3 attacking
turns.
8000 to his 8000-6100 (Gemini) - 1800 (Jinzo + Gemini - thanks
Graceful/Reborn!) - 0
Now my next opponent, Brandon, was a bit more of a
challenge, but not enough. He knew his plight, but took it with a good
attitude. Unfortunately, I lost my notes on this round (I was dumb enough
to take them on a separate sheet of paper.) I won in 2 Duels, as I have in
everything previously. That leaves me waiting on almost the entire other
side of the bracket. As predicted, Cory made it to the
finals.
Round 4 (Finals): Any Given Sunday vs. Cory's Hyper
Beatdown
Duel 1: This one ended up getting won by my newest
card. His Kycoo wreaked havoc, but IFL shifted the game in my favor after
I Change of Hearted said Kycoo. With the game so close we could both taste
it, his attack (after a summon) flips my Fiber Jar, forcing a reset. He
lays one M/T…I got Harpie's AND MST in my Fiber Jar. A Goblin finished it
off.
8000-6200 (Kycoo) - 4200 (IFL payment) - 500 (Gem + Kycoo) to his
8000-7000 (Confiscation on my Yata) - 1800 (Change of Heart the Kycoo plus IFL)
- 0 (GAF)
Duel 2: The hardest Secret Rare to obtain was also my
downfall here. He runs me over with a Jinzo I can't counter. 8000 -
5600 (Jinzo) - 4600 (DD) - 2200 (Jinzo) - 0 to his 8000-5700 (GAF)
Duel
3: This was a very interesting duel to say the least. It was all on
the line…and both of us had out Yata-Garasus out and flailing. I
eventually got out a Spear Dragon along with Yata. He had the ability to
take out my Spear Dragon with his Yata, but THAT would have allowed me to
draw. Let's let the LP tell the story:
8000-7000 (Delinquent Duo) -
4700 (GAF) - 2600 (Change of Hearted Spear Dragon + Yata) to his 8000-7800
(Yata) - 7600 (Yata) - 5700 (Spear Dragon) - 3600 (Spear Dragon + Yata) - YATA
LOCK
The tourney was mine…Yata had pecked his way to a win. As you
know, birds like to hunt for worms…like the first place prize, Needle
Worm! The owner got 5 of them for dirt cheap, and shared the wealth.
To eBay or to maindeck…that is the question…
My tournament pack had a
normal Rare in it (Kwagar Hercules), but who cared? I won, I got TP3's
Ultra Rare, and Jesse's nowhere near getting the Millennium Puzzle
Trophy.
Props and Slops:

Round One…
