Tourney Report:
I’m excited to write this because this was the first Yu-Gi-Oh
tournament that
I’ve ever played in and what an experience. I’m a young adult
and love this
game. I don’t know how all of you keep track of every card
you play, maybe it
becomes habit after awhile, who knows. Anyway, my first
tournament experience
and I’m happy to say that I made it all the way to the
finals, now onto the
matches. Format was set up for best 2 out of 3
duels.
Round 1: Me-vs-Rob (The only grown-up) (Toon
Deck)
Duel 1: I elect to let my opponent go first and immediately saw what
I was up against. He activated Toon World on his very first
play and summoned
Toon Mermaid. I set Gravity Bind and summoned a Karate Man
w/Axe of Despair.
Over the next few turns he summoned Toon Blue Eyes & Toon
Summoned Skull. I had
activated Gravity Bind which kept him from attacking and he
had nothing to get
rid of my “GB”. I also had a Penguin Soldier & Man Eater
Bug set face down. I
flipped summoned both of those and cleared the board, I then
summoned Muka Muka,
played a couple magic cards face down and activated Mage
Power on my Muka Muka.
Then I attacked him directly and wiped him out in the next
couple turns. 8000-0
Duel 2: He got the better of me here, I couldn’t get my Gravity Bind
out, and he got some Toons out and kept attacking my LP
directly. I made a great
come-back late with an Axed Karate Man and added United We
Stand with 2 of my
weaker monsters out on the field, ended up doing a some
serious damage, but came
up short. 0-1500
Duel 3: I got my GB out, used Raigeki to clear the field and leveled
him with my powered up Muka Muka, Karate Man, and Hayabusa
Knight. 7000-0
Round 2: Me-vs-Charlie (13 yrs) Beatdown with Ground
Collapse
Duel 1: This kid had a deck that was about 3 times as tall as mine
and he decked me. He got 2 ground collapses out on the field
and kept countering
my magic removal cards. Late in the game he played Card
Destruction, Reborned my
Cyber Jar, and then flipped his own Cyber Jar. I was toast. I
actually almost
pulled it off, but made a mistake late in the game and got
decked out.
Got Decked w/4000 LP – 1500 (Charlie)
Duel 2: I got my GB out and kept chipping away at his life points,
he hit me a few times with my own cards thanks to Change of
Heart, but I
finished him off when I got my Jinzo out after wiping out all
his monsters and
attacked directly to finish him off. 3000-0
Duel 3: He got Ground Collapse out on me again but this time he
couldn’t stop my Heavy Storm. I got out my heavy hitters
(Karate Man, Hayabusa,
& Muka) flipped my Gravity Bind and finished him off in
no time. 7000-0
Round 3: Me-vs-Joe (13 yrs) Beatdown
Duel 1: This only lasted two
turns. He set first turn, I hit him
with Raigeki, summoned my Axed Hayabusa Knight, set 1 other
magic/trap card,
played Mage Power and hit him directly twice for 6000 damage.
He set again his
next turn, I summoned Karate Man and finished him
off.
8000-0
Duel 2: Almost the same as the first duel, lasted a little longer, I
just kept keeping his side of the board clean and kept
chipping away with
weenies. 8000-0
Finals: Me-vs-Ray (Teenager) Weenie + Gemini
Duel 1: I seriously got worked in the finals and I’ll blame it on my
lack of experience. Ray went first played Gemini Elf and set
a couple magic/trap
cards. I thought I’d try what worked for me before, I played
Raigeki but Ray was
too smart for that, he activated Solemn Judgement and that
was about it for me.
I played Karate Man in attack mode and ended my turn. Ray
played Graceful
Charity, then discarded GAF and Hayabusa Knight to the
Graveyard, he then
summoned another Hayabusa Knight axed him, used Premature
Burial to bring Back
GAF, Call of the Haunted to bring back the other Hayabusa
Knight and then
attacked. GAF took out my Karate Man (I used effect) to
minimize damage, then he
hit me with the others and wiped out my life points all at
once. 0-4000(Solemn
Judgement)
Duel 2: Again Ray just got all the cards he needed, Changed of Heart
my only defense and wiped me out with his Maged Hayabusa
Knight, Gemini Elf, and
my Karateman. 0-8000.
Overall this was a great experience, I got two boosters for
2nd place and I look
forward to facing Ray again in the future.
Props:
To Kirkland Sportscards for sponsoring the
Tourny.
To Pojo and all the other Yu-Gi-Oh players for posting great
ideas & strategies
that helped me build my deck. It may not be totally original
but I tried to add
my own flavor.
To Placing 2nd in my first tournament.
No Slops!!!
