Call of the Haunted
Not bad eh? The details of a lot of my matches are a bit fuzzy, so
I'll just give you guys the best summary that my mind can recall. The
first thing I did when I got there was to check out their singles. I was
looking for a Jinzo in particular(to sub for my dad's Hades that I borrowed for
the tourney) but didn't find any. So I asked the owner and he said he had
one left, he knew a lot of kids wanted it but he'd sell it to me for $20.
I jumped at the opportunity and told him I'd have the money by the end of the
tournament. After a few casual duels and mosying around, the
judges had us sign up, pay our money and get our stinking Magic Ruler
packs. I did pull an SR Maha Vailo though, so I won't complain. I
believe the best pull there was an Axe of Despair. After everyone had
signed up they took about 20 minutes to make the brackets. They ended up
splitting us into two age groups; 12 and under, and 13 and older. I
fit into the 13 and up category(I am 16 incase you're wondering) which
had conviniently 16 participants. We played 4 rounds of
single-elimination tournaments, but we played best 3 out of 5 duels instead of
the usual 2 out of 3. Now onto the matches:
Match I: Me vs. Random Deck Guy
I got lucky on the
first round. The first words the guy said to me were, "You'll
probably have no trouble beating me. I play Magic: the Gathering as a
primary card game and my friends just got me into Yu-Gi-Oh!." At first I
thought he was trying to psyche me but he really was new to the game. His
cards were good but they had no flow, he didn't know all of the concepts
and mechanics, had to ask me questions just about every turn about cards.
I won the first 3 matches without any real competition, got done fairly
early and talked Magic with the guy until the next round began.
Match II: Me vs. Random Deck Guy's Friend
Talk about coincedence, they
slated me up against the guy in the first match's best friend who supposedly
tought him how to play. They ran near identical decks, basically beatdowns
with no combos, just strong monsters. I won 3 in a row again. I
do remember winning the final match by using Ring on my UWS-equipped Airknight
after it attacked to deal some obscene amount of damage.
Match III: Me vs. Fiber Jar Maniac
I swear this guy was insane
about Fiber Jar. He used it whenever he drew it, and he drew it a
lot. We had to reset the first duel about 4 times. By the time
I finally beat him down with my two captains and Freed, most of the other
kids were already finishing up their matches. In the second round, I
started off by playing The Forceful Sentry and seeing Fiber Jar, but
returning CoH instead(yes, he let me go first). I also summoned Zombyra
and ended. He draws, sets a monster, and ends his turn(hmmm..... can you
guess?). I tributed Zombyra for Hades and obliterated his fiber
jar. After that he tried using Dark Hole but I chained with IO, then
attacked direct because he had no monsters, then next turn I activated Ring
on Hades and attacked with GAF ending the duel. The third
duel was about the same as the second, only instead of Hades I used
Reinforcements to search for Sasuke Sam and let him whipe out Fiber. I
still don't know what the strategy of that deck was.... perhaps Exodia.
By this time I was 9-0, and
going to the finals. My dad stopped by to give me
the money he owed me, with which I hurredly bought my precious
Jinzy and an 8th-Edition booster box. I knew I couldn't swap in Jinzo
for the finals but since Hades did so well in my last match I didn't mind
so much.
Match IV: Me vs. Fish
Apparently this guy was in some
sort of a hurry. He ran a beatdown very similar to mine, with IFL and
GAF but Geminis instead of Spears, and some other changes. After I beat
him in the first duel he suggested that we play a 2 out of 3 match instead
of 3 out of 5. This made no sense to me because it lowered the chances of
his victory. I agreed. The second duel was very long and very
complicated. We actually had a 4-block chain, something I'd only done in
casual duels before(I activate Duo, he chains IO, I chain Seven Tools, he chains
Curse of Royal). In the end he beat me with a powered up
Hayabusa because I failed to draw any monsters. This was it, the final
match to decide the winner. I decided to go first. He got out
a Lilly and GAF very early and killed my wotbf with GAF, I searched for my
own Lilly. I played SORL, summoned Spear Dragon and killed
his Gobbies, 1900 direct too. Ouch. He draws, sets 2 facedown
m/t and a facedown monster, and ends. I draw, use Harpie's Feathers
to destroy his m/t. He chains Waboku. I summon Marauding
Captain and special summon Lilly, and end. He draws, turns Lilly to
defense mode and ends. I draw, sac Captain for Hades, attack his facedown
with Hades. It was witch. Ouch! I kill Lilly
with Spear and treat him for 3400 Injection damage. I draw, play CotH
on my captain, summon another captain from my hand, and finish him off. He
tried to use cylinders on Hades to save himself but I used Barrel Behind
the Door and delivered the Coupe de Grace.
YAY, I won! I got to pick any 10 packs, from which I
chose:
2 LOB
2 PSV
3 LOD
3 PGD
I got crap except for the first
pack I opened. It was an LOB and I got Tri-Horned Dragon, which
I traded for an Imperial Order the next day(to go into my father's
deck). I also swapped out Hades, my MVP for this tourney, and put in
Jinzo. I hung out for another hour after the tournament ended to chat and
watch duels. Something funny happened... one of my friends dueled a
guy who used all 3 god cards, and the guy managed to get 2 of them out.
Anywho, onto Props/Slops
Props:
-To my dad for letting me use Hades in the tourney
-To Hades for saving my ass so many times in the tourney
-To the owner of the store for holding onto that first edition Jinzo for
me
-To Jinzo for being such a cool monster
-To all the duelists I faced, all were good sports and didn't argue or
complain at all
-For my pulling a Tri-Horned Dragon in my first LOB pack
-For my 11-1-0 rec in the tourney
Slops:
-To my cousin and his friend, who were both eliminated by Fish in the first
two rounds
-To my bad luck with boosters after pulling Tri-Horned Dragon
-To those crazy judges, who still think that when you deal battle damage
with Airknight Parshath you may search your deck for any card and add it to your
hand
Expect another tournament report from me in exactly two weeks, when I
return to Waterford for more dueling.
