Tournament at Latest Craze

Sun Prairie, WI

12/13/03

Andrew Bowling [syscoguy@hotmail.com]

There were 36 players competing in two diversions.  The divisions are split between 9 and 10 years old (9 and younger, or 10 and older).  The cost is $3.00 per person, and the prize for each age group was a God Card.  The tournament is run every two to three weeks on Saturday, the normal first place prize is $20 in store credit.  This was the final tournament before the holidays so that why the prize was upgraded.  The tournament is single elimination and as soon as you lose you get your choice of any one pack (no Dark Crisis in yet).  Although it is not an official Upper Deck tournament (no Tournament packs no points on my standings) it does follow all the rules, i.e. no Japanese Cards and no God Cards in decks.

Round One: Andrew (me) vs. Dawson

Not sure what type of deck he was running, the only damage I took in the first game was attacking a strong defense monster.

Me 8000 - 7550 – 7350   Dawson 8000 - 6900 – 2000 – 0

The second game was pretty much the same, he used change of heart on my witch and launched it with cannon soldier, and I lost 800 for using premature burial.

Me 8000 - 7500 – 6700  Dawson 8000 - 5400 – 2100 – 0

Round Two: Me vs. Bob  (Gravity Bind Scientist Deck)

I have faced Bob many times before at tournaments, he is very good and always runs interesting decks, not generic beat downs.  Game one only lasted two turns, I went first set spirit reaper in defense and ended.  He use CoH and then used it as a tribute for a face down monster.  On my second turn I set Witch and ended.  He summoned scientist, flipped up catapult turtle and that was that.

The second game I started with an awesome hand.  I took 200 damage attacking on of his face down high defense monsters.  Me 8000 – 7800  Bob 8000 – 5500 – 1300 – 0

The third game I thought I was in trouble as he got gravity bind out early and attacked me with sangan.  I took another 1000 for delinquent duo but then things turned around when I was able to get out Jinzo.  Me 8000 – 7000 – 6000  Bob 8000 – 6800 – 4800 – 3800 – 3100 – 900 – 0

Round Three  Me vs. Mike (Beat down)

He had me on the ropes in both games but my warriors were able to come through for me.  Me 8000 – 5100 – 4600  Mike 8000 – 5300 – 5200 – 2800 – 0

The second game was going pretty much the same although he hit me late for 4400 and I thought I might not be able to pull it of.  Once again Jinzo saved the day.

Me 8000 – 7400 –7200 – 6400 – 2000  Mike  8000 – 6600 – 4600 – 0

Round Four Semi Finals Me vs. Alex  (Beat down with some hand destruction)

I duel Alex before and found him to be good but he has not had the greatest decks.  Well today he certainly had a good deck and played it well.  The first game he had me on the run.  Me 8000 – 6900 – 6100 – 5700 – 3600 – 3400 – 3100 – 900

Alex 8000 – 7000 – 5800 – 3800 – 2400 – 3400 – 2000 – 0

The second game went quicker.  He got in a couple of shots and then I was able to swarm him. Me 8000 – 6800 – 6400 – 0  Alex 8000 – 6900 – 2800 – 1400 – 0

Round Five Finals Me vs. Tim (Spell casters)

Tim is a very good player; he has won this tournament the last 4 times in a row.  He is also my son.  I have beaten him at other tournaments and in casual play, but never at this tournament.  The first game started off with me taking a big hit, I was able to clear his field and start hitting him with Don Z.  After a couple of turns I was able to Yata lock him.  Me 8000 – 3200 Tim 8000 – 6600 – 4600 – Yata

Second game went back and forth with each of us using snatch steal.  He was able to overpower me in the end.  Me 8000 – 4000 – 5000 – 6000 – 2000 – 1600 – 0

Tim 8000 – 3400 – 1400 – 2400- 500

The third game was very similar to the second without me doing much damage.  He had me down and then I had to forfeit as the younger division had ended and we had to leave for my daughter’s dance recital.  Me 8000 – 2200 – 3200 – 4200 resign

Tim 8000 – 7700

It was a great tournament. I had never made it to the finals before, so that was great.  In addition to Tim winning the older division my daughter won the younger division and extended her winning streak to 4 in a row.  Because of the size of the shop only 12 games can be played at once so there is a long delay while each round is being finished.  When I was not playing I was judging.  It is always fun to be able to help some of the younger duelers learn the rules and good sportsmanship.
