(Morning Tournament)Justin Howard – Convinced on AIM/IRC
Mesa, AZ – April 1st
Their was a rough amount of people their, about 25, yet they always break it up into two divisions of younger and older. So together it would have massed over 40 people. Anyway, entry fee was 3 dollars.
This is a long report, not hard reading. But mainly long. Bear with me.. You’ll get a treat. I got there at the open, I was actually tired, more than anything. I was their Friday playing a 10 or 13 (Not actually my deck) Belcher deck for Magic. I got 3rd, sadly losing to one deck that I believed was not actually good in T2, Tooth and then a random Ravager build. Oh well. </rant>
I get there and two people are there, Ricky, and Jeremy J, not to confuse with the other one, if anyone I know reads this here report. Both pretty much live there. Anyway, I come in and right away fill in for Ricky as he helps out at the store, I lose and obviously so, it’s a random Masticore/Safe Return build with Exodia. So I pull out my dumb build of Control, the same deck everyone has, but +1 DDWL (3). Just to roll through without Thunder Dragon. Anyway, I play a game, literally one game and then break it up and buy a Guardian Sphinx. I seen Trevor from another store play it, looks like a cool deck. The deck posted however is on memory, I lost the original deck list after I messed with it a bit. So here’s what I conjured up before the tournament.

Call of the Haunted
Obviously, the playing strategy is to use the GS and just Yata lock them with a Messenger of Peace, they take 100 more than you if you just go with Yata but eventually you pull out another recursion card and attack with something else like a Reaper or the Sorcerer. I beat quite a lot of people after I threw it together. Obviously it was a fast build, as I put in 2x Solemn to negate HFD/Heavy and other obvious things like Nobleman. And the inclusion of Breaker and 1 light for Black Luster Soldier.
Anyway on to the report.
First Match – Nolan (With f00b’s Deck)
This was an unfair match-up, as Nolan is running Dave’s deck, which is amazingly lucky. First game he gets crap, and I just lock him. Second game, he gets Thunder’s going and I look the other way and he wins, I shrug. It looked pretty anyway. Game 3, we just make fun of each other and the decks, "Who plays Pot of Greed?"
W1-L2-D0 (In case you do not know, which I doubt, Wins/Losses/Draws)
Second Match – Some kid
I didn’t like this match, he was like 14, and barely made the cut into the older group. Great. Anyway, he plays Blue Eyes, and need I say more? I pretty much stall with a Messenger and then Space + Snatch for game and other good stuff. Game 2 was a repeat but I won with a Sphinx lock and a Masked Sorcerer. He proves his elite purpose.
3-2-0
Third Match – Older Fellow
I can’t remember his name but the first game was slow enough in pace that I could fully lock him out, he was playing a Beatdown deck. He played at Regionals just last month and I remember his face well, I would guess his name Kevin. First game we go a little back and forth, Sorcerer draws a card or two and then I draw out a Messenger. I work on getting a GS, but it just leads out and I lock him. Game two and were running out of time. Again, long and in the process of a Messenger I get a Yata after he kills my Witch and he just scoops and says, "Finish." Overall he was pretty cool to play against.
5-2-0
Fourth Match – Jun
Jun is a local player. He plays a Beatdown deck with some tech and it’s good and wins more than it loses. Anyway, we played like 8 games before the match and we had no idea what life points were the whole time, we just went with, attack – you lost. Or you got one turn worth of life points left. Anyway, we play it out and he is forced to start the Nimble Momonga beats. I find my ways around it and Sphinx rolls through. Same for game 2, I win with Sorcerer Ownage.
7-2-0
Fifth Match – Yugi / Eric
You would think Eric would lose with his deck. Really, it’s a complete kitchen sink deck (Everything and anything, tossed in.) Anyway he wins, and wins with style none the less. I get bad hands, and when I do have a Sorcerer to pull out of no hand he Torrential Tribute’s. Derrick says he’s Yugi and I agree because he magically wins off that Torrential that turn. Game 2 I get some advantage but then I lose and throw a card at him or something. Oh well.
7-4-0
Last Match – Nolan
Again me and Nolan. But Nolan sucks, and is playing to much VS and other crap. He gets "Bad Hands" or the general YGO statement of I sucked. He complains it out and I win Sphinx-Locking him. Game 2 he topdecks no answer to my Sorcerer and the beats roll in as I draw like crazy. W00t.
9-4-0
Top 8 – Jun
Here’s where I lose. Enough said, I just can’t manage to draw a single Messenger and no counters to an amazing hand of draw power. Overwhelmed.
Anyway I finish in the Top 8 and I get two packs of PSV. I need a new Jinzo, and beyond that pull a Limiter and Premature. Pretty awesome for a random control deck that was built in minutes and had no time to play test it.
As for those who know Trevor and his build Trevor Control, it was obviously different. He said it was different, yet to be technical others play GS anyway. Regardless, the newer build is posted at the end. It did well against Chad Justice that night at like 9-10 PM. We played a lot of games and most of the time his DDWL was a dead card and the only time he got the upper was when he Change of Hearted my GS and flipped it to get rid of, (suspense) Sangan. W00t.
Also I thought about posting the later 5 PM tournament. But I played Chaos Control, and it is boring, just imagine 3 Thunders, CED and Luster and me winning 3rd. There you have it, the report at it’s best.
