RegnR8's Absolute Rule
of the Monarchs
Tournament Report for March 12,
2005
Hi all,
Welcome to this week's
tournament report. I hope this writing finds you well and
winning.
Last week, I made an
error in play. I attacked a face down Exiled Force with a King Tiger Wanghu and
my opponent activated Waboku. Since the Exiled Force was flipped up, I
incorrectly assumed the Tiger would destroy Exiled Force by it's effect. As I
discovered later, and many friendly emails pointed out, I was wrong. Even though
I won the match, my opponent went on to win the finals. So it's all
good.
I have been
experimenting with many deck types for the upcoming ban list. Here are some
initial observations on a few cards.
Delinquent Duo.
Stupid. This card is so broken. I hate using it and hate having it used against
me. If you're a moron, don't put this card in your
deck.
Graceful Charity. The
opening hand of Graceful and Pot is BACK! Smooth.
Change of Heart. Ah. I
love the banning of this card. No more Change and attack for the win. Now it's
Snatch and attack. It makes setting cards a little safer, too.
Mirror Force. Well,
it's a good card, but still not that big of a threat. In playtesting, it gets
MST'd or Stamping Destruction or Heavy Stormed or Mobius'd 99% of the time. I
think I've got to use it's effect twice. Meh.
Deck Devastation
Virus. This card is BROKEN in a fiend deck. I like it and that may be my deck of
choice after April 1. Fiends have so many nice
effects.
Fiber Jar. I miss this
little tree rocket. He can't bail me out anymore. Just use Cyber Jar. No
problem.
Sangan. Horray. I like
getting my Morphing Jar.
So anyway, I made some
changes to the deck again. I cut it back to 40 cards and took out Thestalos.
He's ok, but not really a game winner. I was playtesting a Reckless Greed in my
new format deck, and it really helped, so I thought I'd try it out today. The
Royal Oppression really was crucial from the side deck last week, so I kept them
in there.

This weekend, 5
cards hurt me in nearly every match. Heavy Storm, Jinzo, Tribe, Change of Heart
and BLS. Each of these cards turned the game around for my opponent or seriously
crippled me. Early Heavy Storm and 1st and 2nd turn Jinzo and Change of Heart
really killed me. Late game TiV's shattered my field and cost me dearly. Anytime
BLS came out, it was over for me. On to the
PAIN!!!!

I had to make my own
pot of French Vanilla coffee. It's good, but not the same as Dunkin' Donuts.
Boohoo. A few friends came over to my house early and we chatted and dueled for
a little bit and then we all left for the store.
Exciting.
ROUND 1
MONARCHS VS
MYSTIC SWORDSMAN DECK
GAME 1
Wow. I
finally win a die roll and go first. I get a really crappy first hand with 2
Zaborg, Mobius, Fiber Jar, Scapegoat and something else pretty useless. I set
Fiber Jar and Scapegoat.
He summons Marauding
Captain and Mystic Swordsman LV1. Gulp. Bye bye Fiber Jar. So much for a reset.
I activate Scapegoat to the Captain's attack.
I draw Change of
Heart. Ahhh. Lucky me. I hate this card now because it really is broken. I take
his LV1, tribute it for Mobius and destroy his S/T and then attack the Captain.
I set Bottomless.
HEAVY STORM! He
summons Exiled Force, attacks a token and tributes it for my Mobius. Curse you
Exiled Force!
I draw Morphing Jar
and set it.
He sets a
monster.
I have a serious
problem. Do I need the cards from Morphing Jar? Do I want to give him cards from
Morphing Jar? I could flip the Jar, get cards, then tribute the Jar for Zaborg,
or just tribute for Zaborg. I decide to take a chance and simply tribute
the Jar for Zaborg and destroy his set Cyber Jar. That was the right call.
Now it is his turn to
play CHANGE OF HEART. He takes my Zaborg, attacks me and tributes it.
I NoC his LV6.
Hahahah. When I tribute my Behemoth for another Zaborg, destroying one of my
tokens, he can't recover.
GAME
2
This game is pretty
much like the first. CHANGE OF HEART hurts me yet again when he takes my Mobius,
attacks me with it, then tributes it for LV6. I manage to recover from that
somehow and pull off another win.
ROUND
2
MONARCHS VS
BURN
This is an amazingly
fast burn deck. I think I stand a pretty good chance against it
though.
GAME
1
I draw 2 Mobius in my
opening hand and they both take care of all his set S/T. He does get a Lava
Golem out on me, but I take 1000LP damage, then tribute it for one of my Mobius
and that was enough for the win.
GAME
2
I side deck in 10
cards. Including the Royal Oppression, Royal Decree and Magic
Drains.
I never drew anything
I side decked that could help me. After I used Metamorphosis on Lava Golem to
bring out Gatling Dragon (which I couldn't have done legally anyway) he used
Ring of Destruction on it. Bah. He was going to use Ring on the Golem. I had
lost that one already.
GAME
3
I get Jinzo out early,
but he has a Spirit Reaper on the field and I can't get rid of it. I end up
attacking his Fiber Jar and he burns me up a little. I flip my Fiber Jar and he
chains Just Desserts for a thousand and a Secret Barrel for twelve hundred.
After the Fiber flip he kills me with 3 Secret Barrel ALL IN THE SAME CHAIN and
another Just Desserts. That was stupid. Who gets three Secret Barrels all at
once? Crap.
ROUND 3
MONARCHS VS
CHAOS
Well, I have to win
this to have any hope of going any further.
GAME
1
I Snatch his Jinzo,
but a HEAVY STORM wipes that out, and he uses CHANGE OF HEART on my Zaborg and
kills me with both.
GAME
2
I get Ring and
Bottomless in my first hand and mistakenly set both. HEAVY STORM! Woosh!
Somehow, I manage to survive that and we are down to 500 - 100 and I attack him
with Sinister Serpent for the win! Close
call.
GAME
3
I Snatch his Mystic
Tomato and summon a King Tiger early in the game. He then uses CHANGE OF HEART
on my Tiger, tributes for JINZO attacks his Tomato and I am getting obliterated.
I manage to feebly activate a Scapegoat but on turn three, he summons TRIBE
INFECTING VIRUS and I am doomed. This game was a CLASSIC example of how LUCK
can, and will, win you a game. He managed to have ALL the right powerful cards
early in the game.
OK well. I'm out in
the third round. Heavy Storm, Change of Heart, Tribe and Jinzo were the major
causes of the crumbling Empire of the
Monarchs.....sigh.
After the tournament,
we had some time to kill so we walked to the Waffle House and ate before we
headed to the next tournament. I had a good cholesterol filled meal. Pork chops
and eggs, over well, scattered, smothered and covered. They cooked my eggs
wrong, but it was good anyway. After restarting my heart, I headed out for the
second tournament of the day.

4 packs for 1st
3
packs for 2nd
2 packs for third (even though you don't deserve it because you
suck)
Single Elimination
Advanced Format
Maybe 16 to 20 people
today.
We were all late
because we stayed at the Waffle House too long. Some went to the Books A Million
to rip off, uh..ah...I mean trade with little kids. This particular Books A
Million is in a rather affluent part of the county and rich kids go there all
the time and are willing to trade just about anything because more than half of
them don't know what a good card is. But you'd better watch your back because
the little thieves will rob you blind if you aren't looking out for you
stuff.
I'm looking to redeem
myself from the miserable dueling experiences of
earlier.
ROUND 1
MONARCHS VS
BEATDOWN
GAME
1
Heh. Not bad. Not bad
at all. The Monarchs did their glorious job of Monster and S/T destruction and
it was over pretty fast. 5300 - 0.
GAME
2
Brutal. Repeat of game
one, only much faster this time. After Dark Baltar negated the Cyber Jar he set
because I was killing him, and it was the only card he had, it was over. He did
no damage to me and I only paid for the Scientist once. Don't get me wrong, this
was a fairly good deck. My opponent wasn't a noob or anything, I happened to get
a few good draws and really, my deck worked like it was suppose
to.
ROUND 2
MONARCHS VS
CHAOS
This is the same
person I lost to in the 2nd round earlier in the day. NO!!!!!!! This is a very,
very strong deck and a very, very good duelist. So, I am
afraid.
GAME
1
This was a fairly
close game until HEAVY STORM and JINZO kill me. Smashing Ground hurt me, too.
I'm hating on that card, that's why I'm going to start using them! Death to
me....
GAME
2
He used HEAVY STORM
(AGAIN) early and had Breaker and TIVon the field. I had Scapegoat tokens. He
could have won if he just discarded for TIV's effect and attacked, but he
attacked two tokens and discarded for my Breaker instead. I told him to just go
ahead and win, but he didn't.
I had a Metamorphosis
in my hand, and him not discarding for beast cost him the game. I Morphed a
token and took his Breaker and it went south for him after that. I think
he felt bad for me. He also likes one of my daughters so, that may have had a
little something to do with it. Heheheheh.
He never admitted to
actually handing me the game, but I think he did.
GAME
3
My Royal Oppression
comes in handy and I manage to win this one outright. It was a good duel. I
managed to counter a lot and he didn't really have any good draws. I didn't like
the fact that he scooped the second game so, I told him if I won the tournament,
we'd share the packs.
ROUND
3
MONARCH VS
BLS/CREATOR/CHAOS
GAME
1
He Snatch's my Breaker
on his furst turn and then plays Painful Choice and offers me a bunch of light
and dark BLS food and I give him a Fusilier. He summon TRIBE, attacks with both,
then discards for spellcaster.
I draw Scapegoat, set
it and summon my own TRIBE and discard Zaborg for aqua. I set Call of the
Haunted.
He summons a DD
Warrior lady and I activate Scapegoat.
I Morph a token and
take his DD Warrior Lady.
Exiled Force takes
care of a token and TER.
I Call Zaborg and
attack. This is going pretty well. I'm hitting him pretty good and I feel the
control shift in my favor.
Oh no. He top decks
BLS, plays The Warrior Returning Alive and Reinforcements of the Army and
special summons BLS and I get my butt handed to me on a plate because of that
retarded should have been banned BLS. Idiots.
GAME
2
I side deck all the
Royal Oppression, Magic Drains and Kinetics, all the Anti-Warrior stuff I
have
I get all three
Kinetic Soldiers within my first 2 turns. They help a little but, DD Warrior
Lady takes them out and JINZO kills them off. HEAVY STORM and BLS kills me
amazingly fast. It's a sad day for the Monarchs. I never draw a Magic Drain to
stopr his Reinforcements of the Army and I draw one Royal Oppression the turn
AFTER he special summons BLS. That was WRONG!
I GET
OWNED
The
end.
Well, that's it for me
this weekend. The Royal Family gets destroyed and I am going to change the deck
out a little. I hang out and duel some more. I win all the casual duels. We have
a two dollar new ban list mini-tournament and I lose in the first round to HEAVY
STORM and BLS! Crap! I get mad. I have come to the conclusion that the new ban
list will probably NOT have that big of an impact on the meta. Expect to see the
same old decks but with only a couple of cards replaced. People that try new,
creative ways to win, will be buried in the mundane sameness of cookie cutter
crapola.
Optimistically
yours,
RegnR8
