Yubel – The Ultimate Nightmare is the Throwback Thursday choice this week and, with the advent of other Yubel-based cards, has become more playable.
Like Terror Incarnate before it, Ultimate Nightmare needs another form of Yubel to summon it. In this case through, you need Terror Incarnate and not any of the new Yubel monsters to do so. Battle protection is the inherited trait pretty much all Yubel monsters get along with no battle damage. Destroying a monster it attacks and inflicting damage equal to the ATK of that monster is a good ability, even if it is battle-based. It can happen during either turn, but because it needs Terror Incarnate to summon it, you can’t spring it on someone like you can the other Yubel monsters. Spirit of Yubel can be destroyed to summon Terror Incarnate, then use Terror as part of a Fusion Summon of one of the two Yubel fusions, triggering Terror’s effect to get Ultimate Nightmare on the field. While that sounds a bit convoluted, it is rather easy in the archetype now with all the support and Terror Incarnate doesn’t need to be “destroyed” to trigger.
Yubel – The Ultimate Nightmare wouldn’t be playable without the new Yubel support. Even with the new support is honestly isn’t needed for the deck to succeed. The field clear ability of Terror Incarnate works better than Ultimate Nightmare’s burn damage and destruction, and regular Yubel synergy with Spirit of Yubel and the new support and fusions make it a better choice as well. We also won’t get into Fiendsmith…Ultimate Nightmare more playable now, but its value stays the same.

To finish the Throwback Thursday series of covering the Yubel forms, we reach the final form to cover today with Yubel – The Ultimate Nightmare.
The Ultimate Nightmare has all the same stats we’ve seen on every Yubel monster so far, except this one of course is Level 12. It cannot be Normal Summoned or Set and must be Special Summoned via Terror Incarnate, who sadly needs to be on the field and removed via effect to trigger, so no cheating it by destroying that in Deck like you can Yubel and Spirit of Yubel, making The Ultimate Nightmare hard to summon. It cannot be destroyed in battle and you take no damage from battles involving it, which is standard Yubel stuff at this stage. At the end of the Damage Step where this battled an opponent’s monster, you can destroy that monster and deal damage to the opponent equal to that monster’s ATK. Finally a way to deal the damage when the Yubel attacks, it’s just on the hardest one of them all to summon. It can add up for a ton of damage though when combined with Nightmare Pain to double the amount you would have done, which can be deadly. It’s a great effect, and while being the hardest form to summon, it isn’t impossible for it to come up. It doesn’t always come to the point where you need Ultimate Nightmare, hence why you don’t see every Yubel Deck running it, but I personally like it. It feels like a boss monster.

We did Terror Incarnate last time, so this Throwback Thursday is fittingly Yubel – The Ultimate Nightmare, the former final form of Yubel before being replaced by Yubel – The Loving Defender Forever. It’s a level 12 DARK Fiend monster as the next logical evolution of Yubel – Terror Incarnate, though ironically options for searching it generically are quite limited (you probably don’t want to search Ultimate Nightmare anyway). Its stats are, what else, 0 down the line, perfectly working with Yubel’s damage reflection gimmick as usual.
Just like Terror Incarnate, Ultimate Nightmare is a nomi monster, so you’ll have to either summon it from Terror Incarnate being destroyed or cheat it out with Nightmare Throne. Thankfully, this makes summoning Ultimate Nightmare is easier than ever compared to the figurative nightmare (badum-tss) it was before. Like its previous forms, Ultimate Nightmare prevents any battle damage to you when it battles and it can’t be destroyed by battle; unlike its previous forms, however, Ultimate Nightmare is a much more proactive monster, since its damage reflection triggers when it attacks instead of having to bait your opponent. Additionally, if the damage reflection triggers, you can destroy the opponent’s monster as well, a more controlled evolution of Terror Incarnate’s nuke. This is fine since Ultimate Nightmare is now so easy to summon, but the harsh truth is there’s no reason to play it when Loving Defender is not only a superior monster, but also quite easy to summon. You could play Ultimate Nightmare for nostalgia’s sake or for a little value off of Terror Incarnate, but for the most part you’re better off summoning Loving Defender considering it has complete destruction protection and banishes for even stronger removal.
