Dark Paladin

Tuesday

Magical Exemplar continues on the week, who is a Level 4 Spellcaster

(yay!) of the Earth attribute (a bit odd for a Spellcaster) with 1700 attack (meh) and 1400 def (meh, yet again.)

Anyway, Magical Exemplar has a very interesting effect.  Each time either player activates a Magic Card, this card gets two Magic Counters.  You can then remove any number of Magic Counters from this card to Special Summon a Spellcaster-type monster from your Hand or Graveyard whose level is equal to the number of Magic Counters you removed.

Pros:

*Special Summons the selected Spellcaster *The selected Spellcaster can be from your Hand or the Graveyard *Fairly respectable attack @ 1700

Cons:

*Level of selected Spellcaster has to equal the number of Magic Counters removed...meaning, you can't ever choose an odd leveled Spellcaster (case in point...Dark Magician) *For anything big, you are looking at three or more Magic Cards (case in point, four Magic Cards for something like DMoC) *Doesn't automatically gain counters when summoned in ANY way

Honestly, it would be a sweet tech trick to summon this, play four Magic cards, and get a DMoC, but realistically, that isn't going to happer often...if ever.

General Zorpa Magical Exemplar

Well here is "UDE made bad cards for filler rares so that we can't get the good stuff" week. I am actually being a bit bitter. Magical Exemplar is not really bad. 1700 ATK and 1400 DEF are pretty solid, and  Spellcaster is awesome, although EARTH is not the attribute we are looking for in Spellcasters. Her effect is decent, every time a Spell Card is played you put 2 Spell counters on her, and then you can remove any number in order to Special Summon a Spellcaster of the same level as the monster you want to summon.

This has practical uses in Spellcaster decks, as summoning DMoC or Dark Magician is gold. Even Magical Marionette and Dark Magician Girl are decent targets. As it is, there are better things to put your Spell Counters on. Skilled Dark Magician will summon a Dark Magician for only 3 spells, where Exemplar needs 4. Even though she will summon any monster, from your hand is kind of an old trick. Magical Dimension, Magician's Circle and other cards are better for this purpose than our Exemplar.

Though without saying, all of those cards above will help you to play the exemplar, but why wouldn't you just get the monster that you would have gotten with Exemplar with them? You can use this card in a Normal Spellcaster deck though. You play a flurry of spells in that deck anyway and you can get a swarm of Spellcasters to bear on your opponent quickly by using Swing of Memories and Birthright and some of the normal support will get counters on your Exemplar.

She is definitely for fun Spellcaster decks, but competitively it is not really an option as it is just plain slower than summoning Shapesnatch.

Super Rare

Today’s card up for review is Magical Exemplar. This is one of my favorite cards from Light of Destruction. Finally, Spellcasters get another semi-playable monster to use. Being a 4 star, and 1700 attack, it has respectable stats. In a spell caster deck, it isn’t hard to play x spell cards then utilize its power, you just have to protect him long enough to pull it off. Since there is really no “Big Beaters for the spell caster Genre, it would fit best in a Dark Magician deck, since that’s really the only tributes for the type. You could build some turbo deck, with Toon Table of Contents and such just to utilize this card.

Okay! The best spell caster support since sliced bread... er... I mean Dark Red Enchanter.

EARTH ---- not dark?
Level 4 ---- great
ATK/1700 DEF/1400 --- yay! decent!

Super Rare ----- only cost $3 to $5

So lets look at the good sides. You can gain endless advantage off using your spells and graveyards. Upstart Goblins just became your best friend. Add in allures with a lot of dark magicinans, even better. Then you can get summons on free monsters like Skilled Dark Magician. Believe it or not, 1900 is AMAZING this format. The ability to wreck stratos, lequari, and more straight in the face is unbelievable.

That being said, she herself is only 1700. Also, if you're collecting spell counters on a card, that royal magic library card is much much better. Drawing over reviving is good. While she can become a plus two, (Special summon skilled dark, take out lequari, ram her into darius or something if darius brought back another monster), crow is rampant. Sure, it's a plus one, but then you have a 1700 waiting to be eaten by lequari, stratos, jane, garoth, wulf, and so on.....
