Baneful

It's a reliable form of protection, being both protected by opponent's effects and battle.  It makes your Dark Magician cards indestructible for one turn.  Since, the card would be most likely used during the opponent's turn or during your Battle Phase, it typically won't hurt the monsters that do have effects.  The restrictions largely make this a Dark Magician support.  It could possibly support other rogue archetypes with enough monsters to meet this criteria (though DARK Spellcaster decks, like Gravekeepers, use low level monsters a lot of the time).  It goes without saying that if this were a quick play or if this worked on weaker/non-dark Spellcasters, it would be even better.  Nonetheless, it's a good support card.

Hello Pojo Fans,

A Dark Magician-like trap makes an appearance on our CoTD: Black Illusion.

While it was used in the show with Dark Magician, Black Illusion works with any DARK Spellcaster that has 2000 or more ATK. It makes all Spellcasters that fit this criteria invincible for the turn, but also negate their effects. For Normal casters this isn't a problem, and in a pinch it shouldn't matter if you lose out on an effect. Chaos Sorcerer, DM, DMG, and many more are going to love this card. Gravekeepers alongside Necrovalley gain protection from this card, something that they were lacking in their archetype. It has one-up on Spellbook of Wisdom, covering all Spellcasters, however it is a trap, while Spellbook of Wisdom is a Quick-Play and won't be endangered by having to sit on the field for a turn.

Until the end of this turn, all DARK Spellcaster-Type monsters with 2000 or more ATK you currently control cannot be destroyed by battle, their effects are negated, also they are unaffected by your opponent's card effects.

Black Illusion has a lot of things going for it, including a name that actually includes the word 'Black' without being censored. It's a Normal Trap Card that protects all of the Dark Spellcaster-type monsters with 2000 or more attack under your control from opponent's card effects and battle destruction. This immunity lasts until the end of the turn that it's activated and also negates the effects of the monsters it protects. Of course, Dark Magician doesn't have any effects as a Normal monster, so that doesn't matter. Furthermore, most of the Dark Magician monster support uses effects before you would want to activate Black Illusion. While it might not be searchable in the deck that it was made for, there is a good amount of future potential for other decks that run strong Dark Spellcasters.

Score: 3.5/5 Quickplay Spell would have been better.

Black Illusion

This card is one of the most unfortunately timed cards of all time. Black Illusion was first released in August 2014 in the OCG, before the Dark Magician’s renaissance in the Dark Illusion set released earlier this year. And while it’s clearly meant for the Dark Magician, it is completely defunct, outdated, and utterly useless in the new theme.

I say that for two reasons. First, if this trap had been released along with the other Dark Magician support cards, it would not have protected “Dark Spellcasters with 2000 ATK or more” – it would have just protected Dark Magician, thus allowing it to be searched by Dark Magic Circle, Dark Magic Succession, or Magician’s Rod. Second, if Black Illusion had been timed with the other support, it definitely would have protected Dark Magician from your own effects as well, thus being able to prevent Eternal Soul from killing him should it get destroyed while face up. Of course, I’m speculating. It could be that this trap might have been the same no matter what. But what is unfortunate is that because of the reasons listed above, this trap is inferior and should not be used in the theme.

It’s truly a shame since it’s a really pretty card, especially as a secret rare. But this card has little potential and is outclassed by other Dark Magician card in pretty much every way. I could maybe this as future support for a dark spellcaster theme in the future that isn’t Dark Magician but uses high-attack monsters unlike Shaddoll, but that could be a long time coming.
