Deck Devastation
Virus… Purely broken in concept, but is it really
that good.
Generally, I love the Virus cards. I play the OCG on
and off (using proxies, of course) and before the
original Virus card (sacrifice monster with 1000 or
less, destroy 1500 or more) was restricted, I ran an
average of 1.7 per deck. 5 every 3 decks, then. Of
course, Magic Removal Viral Cannon doesn't count –
Noone knows why they would release a card that thins
your opponent's deck while removing cards from your
field. Especially since the Chaos monsters were
already released.
ANYWAY, back to stuff the average reader cares
about… DDV (and its brother Deck Destruction Virus
of Death (DDVD)) are both associated with a
DARK-heavy deck. The difference is how easy it is
for DDVD to be activated. DDVD (Deck Destruction
Virus of Death, remember) was hugely popular in
Japan in the Japanese Spellcaster/Dark Magician deck
before being restricted to one per deck. Apprentice
Magician, Sangan, Cyber Jar and even Magical
Scientist made it hugely effective at slowing down
an opponent's beatdown deck. I mean, sacrificing a
monster with 1000 ATK or less is not exactly a
difficult task, and you can occasionally benefit
from doing it. Putting a DARK in your graveyard is a
good thing, especially if that DARK is a used up
flip-effect monster or Sangan. The effect of killing
any monster with over 1500 ATK on field or in hand
at the time and any such cards drawn over the next
three turns is also nice.
DDV is an inversion of the Crush Card – 2000 ATK or
more for a DARK monster, so it has to be strong, and
1500 ATK or less for the destroyed monsters, so they
have to be weak.
This kills goat tokens, really hurts Magicians (of
Faith and
Apprentices) and stuff, and I don't imagine any Jar
or D.D. Warrior Lady likes this too much. Don Zaloog
and a few other Warriors won't like it while it's in
hand, and if Lava Golem were a DARK monster, this
would just laugh at burn decks in every way
imaginable.
Of course, burn decks are already going to be
incredibly useless pieces of doodoo pie after a
common from next set comes out and 3 of it replace
all other counters to burn (well, mainly Pikeru's
Circle of Transformation, but this card is so much
better it isn't even funny, and it's continuous.)
So this counters a few alternate win decks,
warriors, the popular Apprentice Magician and Goat
theme, and burn.
This doesn't affect monsters summoned after Virus'
effect goes off.
After activation, you look at what they draw and
that's it.
It's fairly stupid right now, in the English game.
If this were pre-bannination, I'd actually think
about running more than one as t3ch in a d3ck. But
not likely. Saw no play at Shonen Jump, either.
Regardless, it is a Virus card, and if you kill two
or more cards (which is quite likely) then you broke
even.
Oh, the cost is annoying to meet unless you run
Gravekeeper's or Skill Drainb (possibly Fiend too,
but I'm talking commonly played stuff). It does
nothing at all against Gravekeeper's, unlike what
some people have been saying… A Spy in defense
position will get the boost of Necrovalley if
flipped up to be checked by DDV (only if Necrovalley
is on the field, of course) so that sort of makes
the whole thing rather pointless. If you discard
from hand, hey look Rite of Spirit and that sure
makes my Royal Tribute hurt a hell of a lot less.
Skill Drain should be running Final Attack Orders
for Scapegoats already, and seeing as how one other
monster under 1500 hurts them (Exiled Force), so
this is rather pointless.
General:
Traditional: 2/5. I realized I sort of ignore the
1.5-2.5 area, so I revised my rating system. Now a 4
actually means something, and a 3 is good. With no
targets at all save for CED (whose effect is
slightly better at killing your opponent's hand,
hrmm?), the use of it means slightly less.
Advanced: 3.4/5 Here's where it shines. Someone
might be sane enough to run Zombyra or Giant Orc in
this format, so…
Gravekeeper's:
Traditional: 4.4/5 – hitting Donny Z, Witch, Sangan,
Cyber Jar, Fiber Jar, Morphing Jar, and more cards
banned in Advanced helps a lot, especially since a
Geki + Don is less likely to happen.
Advanced: 3.8/5 Less to hit + loss of field presence
= lower rating.

This card gives one of the biggest payoffs
we have in the game today for a single card
effect.
The requirement is really easy to fulfill
for the right decks -- Chaos decks that
use the Sorcerer can get dual advantage from
summoning him -- he comes out, RFGs, then
gets sacrificed for DDV. Warrior decks can
put Zombyra the Dark in to help -- Zombyra's
a great opener (no steal-attack), searchable
by Reinforcements of the Army, and doesn't
require a Tribute or any other cost.
Let's look at the effect -- any monsters on
the field at the time that are 1500 or less
die; anything in their hand that's 1500 or
less dies; anything they draw for the next 3
turns that's 1500 or less dies. The
beautiful thing about this is that you get
to see their hand at the time of activation
and you see their draws for 3 whole turns --
that's one heck of a continual Forceful
Sentry! Even if you don't kill a single
monster (which is rare), you'll be
well-prepared for anything your opponent is
going to do.
There are a few ways around the effect
though; if this thing kills a Sinister
Serpent, it comes back in the Standby
Phase. Also, monsters can still be revived
(Premature/Call/Creator/whatever)...that
destroying monsters on the field thing only
happens ONCE.
This didn't see much play at the most recent
Shonen Jump Championship, but if people
start playing Warriors, expect Zombyra and
this to start showing up a bit more.

Deck Devastation Virus
This is not Crush Card. That’s the first thing I
need to make clear. This is, however, quite a good
card. First off, it’s a Normal Trap, meaning it’s
chainable – secondly, if you play this correctly,
you could do massive damage to your opponent’s
options.
The cost hurts this somewhat; there aren’t too many
2000 ATK+ DARK monsters you’d want to sacrifice.
Zombyra will do, as will Giant Orc, however, as both
of those are easy to summon.
Afterward, you get to look at your opponent’s hand.
You get to look at all the monsters on your
opponent’s field. AND you get to see every card your
opponent draws for the next several turns. Any and
all monsters with 1500 or less ATK will die. If he
has a Sangan, Magician of Faith and Cyber Jar in his
hand when you activate this, they’ll all go bye-bye.
It’s very nice.
This also, of course, works well with cards like D.D.
Designator and Mind Crush; after all, if you know
what’s in your opponent’s hand, the risk of using
them is greatly diminished. This card could be very
effective in the right deck, extraordinarily rentsy.

Deck Devastation Virus
As FET Week progresses we are required to review
Deck Devastation Virus, Japan’s way of teasing us
for not having Deck Destruction Virus.
To activate DDV you need to Tribute a DARK monster
with 2000 ATK or more.
That shouldn’t be to bad; Zombyra the Dark and Giant
Orc are two Level 4 monsters with more than 2000 ATK,
and if you don’t have those you could give Don
Zaloog a Malevolent Nuzzler or Mad Dog of Darkness a
Black Pendant.
They’re unconventional methods of getting a DARK
beatstick, but they get the job done. Once active,
DDV allows you to check all monsters on the
opponent’s field, all cards in their hand, and all
cards that they Draw over their next 3 turns for
monsters with, drum roll please, an ATK of 1500 or
less. Wow. What began as a card that simply had a
slightly difficult to come by cost has turned into a
card that will be getting rid your opponent’s
weakest monsters. Wow again.
Now the effect isn’t so bad I suppose; you get to
see what your opponent’s face-down monsters are,
what the cards are in their hand, and what they draw
for the next few turns. You’ll also be destroying
your opponent’s Sangans, DDWLs, Zaloogs, ums, and
etceteras. The only real downside to the card is
that you’re giving up a beatstick so that your
opponent can’t have any pushovers for a while.
Sounds like an unequal trade to me. You could use
DDV in a DARK Beatdown I suppose, but I’d just wait
for the REAL DDV to be released, which may happen
before the end…
Advanced: 3.5/5. Jinzo will be the best monster to
use to activate DDV, but I wouldn’t recommend it.
Traditional: 3.5/5. See Advanced.
Overall: 3.5/5.
Art: 1.5/5. It looks like green pollen, which shall
lead me to from this point further to call Deck
Devastation Virus Deck Devastation Asthma.

Deck Devastation Virus is, sadly, the first of the
two viral trap cards released in America. The other
one is Deck DESTRUCTION Virus, which would basically
say "you all suck" to the kycoo/assailant/BLS loving
environment. ;P
With that said, by looking at the text of this trap
card, you know that you're getting your tribute's
worth with the effect. You have the potential for
more than a 2 for 2 trade-off after the three turns,
you see ALL of your opponent's face-down monsters,
and you get to see your opponent's hand. All of that
for tributing a 2000 ATK or higher dark monster,
which can be easily fulfilled. Look at Zombyra,
Vampire Lord, Ryu Kokki, Giant Orc, Dark
Elf...plenty of options there.
It's hard to say whether or not this should be a
side deck card at this point. The environment for
the advanced format is showing a lot of incredibly
deadly monsters with low ATK...in traditional, this
destroys scientist and is an available option, and
it destroys the even more annoying Magician of
Faith. I consider this card to be a main deck
candidate for zombies and warriors easily, and at
the very least a side deck option.
In limited, pass this card up quickly if you're only
drafting FET. There's one natrual dark monster with
2000 ATK and above, and it's a fusion. Enough said.
=/

Advanced: 3.5/5

Once again, classes necessitate that I be very
brief with my reviews. I wasn’t go to review at
all, but there seems enough dissent in at least
a few of the CotDs this week to warrant my
participation (e.g. I disagree and can’t keep my
mouth shut or fingers off the keyboard).
Besides, I really do need to shorten my average
review length.
Wow. Another way to almost
completely ruin
Gravekeepers. Is there some
über-unbeatable deck
using them that the general dueling public is
unaware of? Seriously though, this cards effect
is pretty good. Yes, it is annoying to have to
sack a Dark Monster with an ATK of 2000 or more
to activate this Trap, but we do have some good
options that can be added to almost any deck,
like Zombyra
the Dark Hero (a.k.a. Wannabe Spawn).
Destroying all opposing Monsters with 1500 (or
less) ATK that your opponent has in play, in
hand, or draws for the next three turns has
potential for a huge reward. Had this come out
when the game was young, it wouldn’t have done
much good. Now, though, we have so many strong
support Monsters with nasty effects but small
ATK scores. D.D. Warrior Lady, the
Jars, most Attribute (and Type) searchers,
and several theme-specific Monsters get
trashed. You do need to nail two to break even,
but the potential return is staggering.
There are ways around this effect, though.
Cyber Jar, for example, “picks up” cards
instead of drawing them, so those Monsters are
safe. Still, for depletion or control decks,
this is a good choice to main deck (assuming you
can adjust to meet the requirements to use), and
for most decks, it’s a decent side deck
candidate since it can mess up things like
Weenie Rush and
Gravekeepers. Yes, I mentioned them
again; only one
Gravekeeper’s Monster has more than
1500 ATK, and they excel at swarming. Just be
careful with deck’s that feed off the Graveyard
in some manner… like Chaos. Somehow I think
discarding their Don
Zaloog and Shining Angel from
hand will really upset those (and those are just
random legal targets I’ve seen; if no serious
deck uses them, insert the right cards XD).
Traditional:
4/5-This assumes a deck geared towards taking
advantage of this… which to be fair, would
qualify most decks that can add that 2000 ATK
Dark Monster, since this is great for aiding in
a Yata-Lock. You
might clear their hand a field in one shot! It
also could kill their copy of The Bird.
Advanced:
3.5/5-This is a general rating, so bear in mind
it is still more useful here.
I think it makes a strong side deck candidate,
again assuming you can meet the relatively
simple requirement. Two copies of this and
three Zombyra
might seem like a lot for, say, an ALO
deck, and it is. For Chaos and Warrior Chaos,
though, it’s practically nothing.
Limited:
1/5-It’s possible I
messed up, but I didn’t find any non-Fusion
Monsters in this set that meet the Tribute
requirement. Be pretty nasty in a Starter deck
(which usually adds one or two boosters) though.

Deck Devestation Virus
YAY! I've waited for this card for a very long time
and I'm so glad we finally have it in English. This
card is single-handedly the MISTAKE for
semi-restricting Vampire Lord since he fits EVERY
criteria for this card.
Tribute your Vampire Lord and bam. You have crippled
your opponent for 3 turns.
All their 1500 attack monsters or less are uselss
for THREE turns. Yes folks, that INCLUDES their DD
Warrior Lady. Unless they had other monsters on the
field, your free to just chip away at their
lifepoints for three turns.
It wouldn't hurt to have Jinzo on the field after
using this though to protect yourself from potent
Mirror Forces and Wabokus. This card is also cool in
the fact you get to see the opponents 3 cards drawn
due to this card. So, even if they aren't monsters,
you got to SEE they drew their Mirror Force :)
Isn't this card evil? However, I don't believe this
card is for every deck.
Obviously, it's best use is in a deck
disruption/destruction deck, hence it's name. Go
ahead and use it, if you have it. It could be
crippling.
Conclusion: I look forward to pummling my opponent
as they sit and WATCH!
Ratings:
Traditional: 4.0/5
Advanced: 4.6/5
Limited: 4.9/5 You could even use a Dark Magician or
something here,
and
your opponent WILL be hurt.
You stay classy, Planet Earth :)
